LIFE’s Challenges.

June 10, 2024 71 Comments

We are half way through the year and I am so tired of the WORLD IN WHICH WE LIVE!

NOT MUCH TO BE HAPPY ABOUT IS THERE?

We need to find our own happiness and leave the UGLINESS BEHIND.

Or better yet get INVOLVED and HELP SOMEHOW!

As you know I am in need of some WONDERFUL MEDICAL ATTENTION or ADVISE!

This X-ray I had done in a chiropractors office after a massage that was PAINFUL.

I get massages frequently due to the tension in my back and neck.Have for many years now.

They have never hurt BEFORE YESTERDAY!

Long story SHORT I have asked for a NECK X-RAY in the past from my NEUROLOGIST and Medical Doctor. They always have skipped over it.

So, I sent them these two photos!

My MD is saying NO!

He tells me the eyes have nothing to do with the neck ………….

After me getting “BENT OUT OF SHAPE ON THE PHONE”he tells me he will have to see me in the office before giving referral. He will have his office call…………that was 6 days ago.I have called BACK TWICE!

Meanwhile, I got an Advise nurse on the line who put me through to a medical doctor who said,I’m not a neurologist you need to call their office. My neurologist is on vacation.I am having terrible headaches and PAIN in the back of my SKULL since the BOTOX INJECTIONS!It took two weeks for the site of the injection pain to go away and now I am left with TENSION and a FIST like feeling in the back of my skull.

I wrote the Neurologist an email on June 6,2024.

The message back to me is he is OUT OF THE OFFICE UNTIL June 24 ,2024.

I started ALL of this in JANUARY of this year, because I had noticed a RISE IN MY EPISODES FROM THE YEAR BEFORE.

JUST MAYBE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY NECK…………………..!!!!

But let’s back up to TWO WEEKS AGO!

RECALL I had BOTOX injected for MIGRAINES INTO MY SKULL,FOREHEAD AND BACK.

I have suffered immensely since that was done.Headaches, soreness where the injections were administered, headaches daily and OH MY GOSH MY EYE EPISODES are coming TWICE A DAY and with more of a VERTIGO FEEL TO THEM.Meaning no light headness just plain old DIZZY!

HORRIFIC TO LIVE THROUGH!

Leaves one so drained and ZAPPED!

I even SNEEZED and I got an EYE EPISODE!Because my head fell forward with speed and my neck got pulled.I couldn’t get to a chair.I had to yell for HELP from THE ITALIAN.

IN 2023 I had 45 eye episodes in total for the year.

AS of June 4th 2024 I have had 49.(That is just half a year!)

STANFORD DOCTOR WILL WEIGH IN ON THURSDAY…………I CAN’T WAIT!

SHALL WE TAKE BETS WHAT HER RESPONSE WILL BE?

ENOUGH OF ME AND MY WOES………..!!!!

LET’s HAVE SOME FUN!

LET’S GO TO LUNCH further south from where I live.

I was driven to SANTA CRUZ by a reader of THE VINTAGE CONTESSA her name is VIKKI.

We had lunch with HEIDI in her GORGEOUS COLLECTED HOME!

I LOVE THIS PHOTO I TOOK of HEIDI!

Her dress came from TARGET!

VIKKI ASKED as we were getting the tour!

(I know you were wondering!!RUN TO TARGET)

SHE COLLECTS THOSE ITALIAN TRAYS!

THEY ARE ALL OVER HER KITCHEN!

THEY COME FROM FLORENCE, ITALY……………my second HOME!

Can you see the food HEIDI PREPARED?

AN EGG SOUFFLÉ with ARTICHOKE HEARTS and a Quinoa salad with tons of vegetables that was DELICIOUS!A fruit plate with strawberries and watermelon and the GRAND FINALE was a chocolate mousse!

I find eating in, at friends homes is so much better than going OUT these days!

It’s SPECIAL as they put the time and effort into it and let’s face it the taste exceeds the LUNCH SPOTS!

THIS WAS THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR HERE FOR US IN Northern California.

Temps reached into the low 90’s.

These two started painting in their 60’s!Both accomplished artists and both do incredible PET PORTRAITS that don’t break the BANK!They both studied INTERIOR DESIGN and worked in that field for sometime as well……………SO THEY HAVE A GOOD EYE!

Vikki on the LEFT and her email is………Vbelle1@yahoo.com

Heidi on the right and her email is………heidimichelle.artstudiogmail.com

Just in case you want to inquire about cost and size and chit chat about ART!

Both WOMEN smart, educated and are fascinating to talk too.

Vikki knows how to LAND A PLANE and Heidi’s Father received TWO Purple Hearts from World WAR 2.

THAT SHOULD PEEK YOUR INTEREST!

Both WOMEN on INSTAGRAM here are their names there.

    Hi Elizabeth,

I’m so glad your toe nail is better already. WOW, that was fast. With all your chronic health issues the toe fungus is lower on the top of your list. My podiatrist told me to use the Vicks vapor rub everyday, it’s also a preventive thing.

My friends that were under Mayo Clinic Hospital on Mayo Blvd. in Phoenix. on going care also with surgeries, strokes, serious cancer surgery they all had nothing but good reports. The other Mayo is off Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale.

We have two extended Doctor family members that work at Mayo Hospital. One a Gastro doctor the other Palliative care. There Science and research is outstanding.

Keep me posted on what’s happening. What type of specialist would you be seeing at Mayo?

    Hi Elizabeth,

I don’t think you want to come to Scottsdale, Arizona to have an appointment with Dr. Cathleen A. McCarthy of Pinnacle Peak Podiatry. All the Mayo Clinic Hospital send their patients to her. They do not have a Podiatry department. Check get out on line. She spends so much time with me, it’s like she does not have another patient. She is always booked solid too. Getting to know you I just know you would connect with her. She is very intuitive and knows feet, toe nails everything inside out. I travel 45 minutes for her to care for me. We have a podiatrist 5 minutes from our home. I love that, but she is worth the drive. She used to do foot surgery, but stopped that because usually there is never a positive outcome.
Dr. also got me into such better sneakers. Hoaks are great but after wearing them for 3 years they were doing damage to to feet, high pain level happening. Good old arthritis.

Glad the Stanford doctor will be ordering an MRI on your cervical area. I hope that will reveal some news to help you.

As you know I’m a California girl SF and Marin County. I know Stanford hospital is outstanding. Hopefully they will help you with your issues. The hospital is only as good as their doctors.

You remain in my well wishes, keep those very disconcerting episodes at bay. My heart goes out to you.

    Hi Elizabeth,

I have not read comments so perhaps others have already mentioned a few things to you that I’m.

Why is your MD saying no x-ray of your neck? If not would an ultra sound be beneficial? I have arthritis in my neck and at times it’s very painful. I try to keep my head back as much as possible. My RA doctor as well as my Honey Bear (husband) advised me to do the same thing. I have been using “The Original Bed Buddy” (Amazon) on my neck and wherever the pain is. I’ve used these for about 22 years. They are a God send to me. They are reasonable too. Warning: If you decide to buy one, be careful with the micro wave oven. They all vary. I put mine in for one minute 30 or 45 seconds. You do not want to burn it, by overheating. That oder goes away.

OMG, the aftermath of the Botox injections, how horrid and very scary. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Good for you, feeling well enough to be driven to Santa Cruz. That is a long ways from Orinda. It’s such a special place.
Lovely friends and Heidi prepared beautiful good for all of you.
    They are both talented ladies.

NO, cutting your large toe nail way down to help with the fungus was an excellent move. You will not get an ingrown toe
nail. I will not go to a nail salon to get a pedicure. I don’t trust how sanitary the tubs snd equipment are. I know you are younger than I’m. Once you reach Medicare they allow you to get your toe nails cut at a podiatrist I believe every 60 days, and callus removal etc. . I think the world of mine. She is TOPS in our community.

    I M P O R T A N T:
My podiatrist wants me to put on VICKS VaporRub every day on my toe nails. It helps prevent or of you have fungus. I do this with a Qtip daily.

My neighbor/friend said many years ago she used her father’s shower and she picked up a fungus from his shower. She killed it with Vicks VapoRub. Also she uses it still everyday. I always remember it being put in my chest when I had a chest cold as a youngster. My mama would wrap an old cotton tee around my neck.

You remain in my well wishes and my thoughts.

Yikes, all the never ending health issues but you remain so cheerful and positive. You continue to inspire us with your amazing stories and photos!

The nail fungus definitely should be treated. There are sprays for it. Your pedicurist should have informed you of that.

Keep us posted about the doctor appointments and wishing you great progress with your health.

Margi here – would you believe I will celebrate my 90th birthday this Sept. 16th.
I’m still doing most everything —
I have started GOJI Berries – have you tried them?
So happy you are doing some exercises. That is so important – I think you use to see me at Brickyard Landing walking some 30 years ago. Martin and I walk 5 or 6 days a week and I do about 15 minutes more of various stretches and exercises.
Much love to you and the Italian.

I go to an OrthoSpinologist for very similar issues. They are experts in the Atlas and neck area. They have two more years of education over a normal chiropractor. Find one in your area and they will probably be able to help you.

I’m looking forward to hearing about the results of your upcoming appointment! I can’t believe how your episodes have increased, that really takes a toll. I’m sorry about that.
The picture of you in the garden (or looking out to it from the doorway) is so beautiful.
It will feel good for you to purge, in the end, having more space will be a nice feeling.
Speaking of silver; I have a silver chandelier, it’s not very big but it is made with an old silver teapot and sugarbowl. It has silver spoons hanging from each candlebra. It is hard to explain it in writing but it’s one my mother bought for me from an artist friend of hers, decades ago! She had bought my sister the mirror, which was encrusted with silver spoons and other silver trinkets. I would hope her daughter took it since my sister passed away in 2020.
We recently had to find a new place for my chandelier in the house and settled on the living room (replacing the ugly light that was there). Once it was hung up I sighed and said to my hubby, “I’m home now”. I have moved that chandelier five times in the last 15 years and somehow managed to find a spot for it in each place, all apartments. It is tarnished as it should be although I was tempted to shine it up before we hung it this time. So, I can’t decide if it’s kind of ugly or simply charming. Either way, I love it and it belongs with me forever.
Sorry to go on a long story.
Always nice to read about what you’re up to, LA CONTESSA.

Just to clarify – the trays I collect are actually vintage pre WW ll Japanese paper mache’. I do have a couple of Florentine ones that were given to me that I like, too. But I don’t consider them a part of my collection!
Thank you for the mention of the pet portraits, too! They are always fun for me and the recipients get a kick out of them.

    Dear Contessa,
Thank you for your authentic sharing. I can hold and see you. One wish is for the emergence of medical-adjacent pedicure shops. I’d heard that they were coming. Maybe the really large cities first. I’d like one in the Oakland/Berkeley area. I think that both knowledge and skill for an informed pedicure service is possible. Delivered with care, some luxury and joy–would be delightful.
I have neck issues from a rare infection in my C1 & C2 (6 years ago) that left me with a stiff neck. PT was initially offered and dropped after we changed medical provider. You’ve inspired me to seek more help. Seems that pain in the neck can influence so may other body parts and general feelings of wellness.
I lived in France for 9 months (48 years ago) and would enjoy your signed book and the Eternal Flame. I will send you a personal note.
Continued hope for you to receive medical care that solves rather than causes more. You look gorgeous in your fresh color caftan. The photo colors!

    Carissima Contessa,
The medical profession has put you on quite the roller coaster ride! I suspect you may have some strong sensitivities to Botox! I know you have had your Atlas adjusted by a Chiropractor, but have you considered seeing an Atlas SPECIALIST? Their treatment is a lot different than what the chiropractor does. My girls and hubby had theirs adjusted years ago by a Profilax Specialist and still doing fine today. Check out: http://www.atlasprofilax.org There is one in San Francisco and practices in another place in California, as well.
Your luncheon with the Artists sounds and looked Marvelous! So Thrilled you made it out there to connect with others. Truly lifts the Spirits!
I bow down to you for finding the energy and having the DISCIPLINE to clean out your house! I am dragging my feet on this !
I am intrigued about your chair yoga! Please do a post on that detailing your routine! Hang in there Bellissima, Contessa! We are all rooting for YOU!

    Dear Contessa,

First, the medical issues. Is there a possibility that you are allergic to Botox? I was wondering about this last night after our texts. Not sure if that would explain your symptoms, but I assume it is possible. Did your chiropractor venture a guess as to how the neck curvature might impact your eyes? A few years back, my chin was apparently about 1/8 to 1/4 “forward.” The chiropractor said he could see it when I walked into the room. He worked with me to get it back in the right place. This had been causing me hideous headaches, neck aches, and severe TMJ syndrome. So, that’s an example of a chiropractor figuring something out from my neck. I can’t help but wonder about a connection where your issues are concerned. As to your toe, you can have a compounded prescription made to treat this problem. As others said, it takes a long time for the nail to grow back out.

On to the positive, I love the account of your lunch! I did a double take over the photo with you at the table; I thought that was Jane Lynch. Both of these ladies are so talented and attractive. I would like to see more of Heidi’s house. So glad you got out for the day. Being with friends is soul-fulfilling.

Please give us some inspiration on how to get rid of excess items. I know I could use the help.

Hang on until your Stanford visit, and get your questions ready. We are all cheering for you.

Ido not know if you remember me, you came into my shop “Lafayette Fashionista” on Brown in Lafayette.

I would like to meet you for a discussion on my health issues. I have a lot to say, but to much detail to be writing.

Be happy, yes, this world is a BIG Mess. But its ours and we must fight to save.

    Blessings on this beautiful day.

    Dear Elizabeth,

So sorry to hear that your health issues are continuing and causing you so much pain and discomfort.
The Stanford medical team must know more…hopefully the next appointment will be soon and will shed some light on the situation.

Fungus does need a doctor’s prescription treatment. Do not delay!

The lunch looks delicious! What a lovely menu! The striped dress from Target looks so nice on the hostess…both women look fabulous. You are in good company.

I liked the idea of sending your husband off to get ice cream while you shopped!!! I never ever thought of that before! I might try it next time I am out with my husband :-))

Good luck with the decluttering and sale of your items. Facebook marketplace is a great place to start if you want to get rid of things!

Best wishes for a great week.

I have recently had the misfortune of having tripped and fallen hard on bathroom tile (at work! tiny bathrm, could have had a severe head injury but thank God escaped that) and now in medical matrix, which is just as you describe here in FL. Typing left handed as injury was upper arm fracture to right arm… CT scan tomorrow to see if I will need surgery, but Dr thinks it will heal ok from xray. And all you have had and continue to deal with is so much more complex…. pray that you get some answers soon… seems like best hope is Stanford Dr. But imo there is NO hope for any improvement in the medical access/delivery of care in this country. Really tragic. I would so love something of yours… the silver coffee pot for flowers caught my eye… let me know if available and amount and I will send check 🙂 Once I am functioning again with 2 arms, I will send you photos of Devyn & Joe’s garden–they have just started an insta acct about butterflies, gardens, birds you could check on… only a few posts so far, petes.plants.
Sending XO’s… think of you every night when our fairy lights lights up–D&J have them too–because of you!!

Since you have migraines your dizziness may be coming from a vestibular migraine. There is typically no head pain but there are other symptoms. Look into Dr Shin Beh. Also Vestibular Group Fit where these type of migraines are discussed. Good luck. Took almost a year before I received the correct diagnosis.

Good Morning Contessa! I am so sorry about your health woes!
Here are my suggestions – take them with a grain of salt!
I would try to get to somewhere like the Mayo Clinic or John’s Hopkins, Duke, etc.
Clearly your local docs are not up to the task of figuring this out.
I am starting to feel that way with the episodes that started after my second Covid shot. No one wants to discuss it. I think it’s still a political football.
On your toe – I would agree with Karen – go see a podiatrist. You can also get a medical pedicure – if you are having trouble in that area, I would avoid any and all salons.
But even after all these horrible symptoms, you still look vivacious and great!

    Elizabeth,
So sorry to hear about your ongoing medical issues. It is so disheartening. It takes real determination and persistence to get to the bottom of some of these issues that can cause one so much pain. I hope relief comes soon. Your lunch with your artist friends must have been a welcomed enjoyment. They are both very talented! Your treasures will find a wonderful home I’m sure, you certainly have beautiful pieces that I’m sure were well enjoyed. Toenail fungus is stubborn good luck with that. I remember one time seeing a special toenail polish for helping with toenail fungus, may be worth checking out while you work on other remedies. Sending wishes for feeling better very soon.

“Health Care”, best MISNOMER of the day.

    Thrilled with your shopping.

Great advice in the comments already, “Best to see a podiatrist….”

Had no idea where you were going with the toe pic. Thought it was ‘simpler’ reason. Wish it were. Trimming my own since the debacle. 6 months learning to get it right. Cutting hair since then too. Anyway, thought you were trimming your own, with that pic !

Go Contessa, GETTING RID OF STUFF. Need your help with upcoming move. Downsizing greatly, in joy, yet literal actuality is horrible. Husband was building a house before we married. Southern Greek Revival. Here’s the irony and humor and pain, it’s 1,700sf. 3500sf, antique stuffed currently. Love my ca. 1900 home. Why is this so stinking ridiculous hard?

Contessa, ‘short’ caftans coming from Jaipur ! On the boat now. Keep the ideas coming, I follow all you tell me.

When you buy new ‘clothes’ is your head seeing shoes in your closet for them? Or, new shoes to buy? Both?

Birdies arrived. Only know them thru your blog. Wild timing, 3 pair on sale, $50. Can’t make that up.

Your lunch, the ladies, the food, conversations…………………..glad you share. Will call you, get all the bits you can’t share here.

Hope you and The Italian get your kids, grands…….for Father’s Day.

    Big Hug………………….XOT

      Mrs.Bristow,
It’s HARD BECAUSE WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT OUR STUFF!I finally decided to let a few things go as I do not have the space to display properly.A few items left over from HEN HOUSE days!!
As far as buying clothes and worrying about the shoes, I don’t need to buy another pair of shoes in my lifetime. I have many in my closet. All flats I gave up high heels at 24 when I met the Italian as I towered over him, but no more thanks to osteoporosis. !!
I recently needed open toed sandals to let my fungi toe, breathe and went to Nordstrom‘s and had a field day. I can’t remember the last time I tried on multiple pairs of shoes just for the hell of it and most were on sale and ended up buying three pair which I’m loving, and it made me feel good. It’s important to feel good during the day. !! when I purchase, I tend to purchase in multiples or quite a few items and then nothing for months I don’t buy one here one there and with my favorite shop Bryn Walker in Berkeley I love their outfits full of color and the pants are long enough for me, which I love and it’s all linen or cotton so that’s easy I don’t even need to try it on but that’s taken years of shopping to get to this point. !! I will want photos of you and your new kaftans and Birdies once everything arrives! Hugs to you and best of luck sizing down I wish I could fly in and help you!!!

I love ArT, the pet portraits are fantastic! I am with your other readers, a podiatrist is best! Medical sure has changed, the Drs., nurse shortages; they are exhausted, communication is thru their website & email. What do those do with no or challenged technology, maybe severe handicaps (rheumatoid arthritis affected hands) and pushed to use the website to alert etc the Docs & nurses? World sure has stresses I never imagined. Love the target dress; I like stripes! MaxMara has similiar styles, guess cost but lovely tailoring!!! lol. Some great sale items too Elizabeth. Did you hear Amanda Lindroth shutting down? I can just see all your pets portraits now! Hi Theodore!

      Hello!
I too worry about the older people that have difficulty with technology. I don’t think they’re making it very simple. Anyway it’s the person to person touch and hands on. That really helps make that connection. I thought I had made a connection with my Kaiser MD because he wore snazzy sneakers in turquoise And I kind of bring that up on the phone so he’ll remember me, but he just doesn’t have time to even go there. It’s sad. I’m not one to talk on and on. I’m just trying to get him to remember who I am because he must have thousands of patients .Anyway he always lights up when he sees me I get to see him next Wednesday to see if he’ll let me get a neck x-ray!!!!
      Wish me luck!!

Let’s see what she has to say. I need to sit down and write out my thoughts. Make sure I tell her everything. My fandom is shrinking by each post. The more I talk about the health the more I lose people.!!!! I can’t give them caftans and gardens and outings all the time!!! This is the best way for me to record what happened and who did what for my records? I just feel will look back at this and go oh my God why didn’t they see it? There’s got to be a clue here in all that I’ve had done! you can’t say I haven’t tried, and given each medical expert a chance to work his or her magic! I sadly find this all so humorous and that’s why I relay it here hoping I can open eyes or others can even relate to what I’m saying and there’s a lot of you that can Relate.

    Hi there CONTESSA
Oh my again re your health issues – and to have no improvement re the Botox!
Nerves etc run thru the neck I’m sure to the eyes – so one would think there is some connection.
What a lovely outing you had – I’m sure a scenic drive and then to spend the afternoon with a delightful hostess. Wow delicious menu! Like the yellow/white kitchen.
Yes special care is given when people host others.
See a podiatrist or dr for med for the fungus – it will not go away on its own even with home remedies (I’ve tried) and does take a LONG time to clear up. One is always told cut the nail straight across to avoid ingrown toe nail. As it’s growing you might have to put some cotton in to keep it away from the skin so it doesn’t grow in (my mother’s dr’ advice).
Such treasures leaving your home for others to enjoy.
We had Target here but it folded!
Good re the chair yoga – I did that during COVID – free ZOOM classes.
Roses and peonies are out in my garden.
Lovely animal portraits – the ladies are really talented.
    So important to find joy!

It’s been a few days now NO EYE EPISODES!!!!!!

I had an episode of nail fungus, what cleared it for me was seeing a Dr – can’t remember what type – but I had laser treatment and it did clear it up quickly. I had endured many months of applying the treatment direct to the nail that did not work.

    Ciao Bella,
Well, you know how I feel about entertaining at home. It is always so much more fun, delicious and all around special. It’s lovely to know that you are getting out and about, while still find those bargains to boot! I feel your absolute frustration with your medical team and can empathize that this is definitely not the way things should (or should not) happen. It seems to me that there must be a new protocol set in place where doctors and their staff respond to questions in a timely manner. Let’s face it, they are slow, slow, slow!
A little vitamin E oil and apple cider vinegar will help that fungus quickly.

    Sending you a big hug!

If you have a nail fungus, it must be treated with an anti fungal medicine. It is difficult to get rid of! I’ve had two rounds of Lamisil which requires a blood test every few months to check the liver – takes a year or more for the healthy nail to grow back. The infected nail will be cut back little by little. Best to see a podiatrist when you can.
