NOTO,SICILY

August 7, 2025 67 Comments

Are you up for MORE PHOTOS of the SICILIAN adventure in June?

LET’S START TO SCROLL DOWNWARDS.

SHALL WE………..

Let’s start the tour in a RESTROOM!

MY FIRST STOP. ALMOST ANYWHERE I GO!

The view from the Lobby RESTROOM in our hotel in NOTO.

This is the Breakfast PATIO.

But first a little GAME of sorts………..

How old is this GORGEOUS ITALIAN WOMAN?

She lives in PRATO and drives up the hill to her SONS home who lives next-door to my SISTER IN LAW.

She cooks and harvests the vegetable garden which is FAR from the home!

Lets’ just say from the house to the garden is a GOOD HEALTHY WALK UP A HILL with sheep grazing.

I WILL TELL YOU HER AGE AT THE END OF THE POST!

NO PEEKING.

MANY STRAY CATS VISITED THE PATIO TO MY DELIGHT!

THEY DONOT SEEM TO BE STARVING!

I think they are well fed from the kitchen staff……..

MY sister in laws neighbor below.

Do you have a number in your head yet?

Look at that hair!

Perfectly coiffed for a day of gardening and cooking!

Pearl earrings and a GORGEOUS SMILE all in a DAYS WORK!

HOTEL IN NOTO.

YES!

MY FAVORITE COLOR!

A CHARTREUSE GREEN TERRACE.

Wish I could have taken this whole LOOK HOME WITH ME!

NOTO THE TOWN.

VIEW FROM ROOFTOP TERRACE.

The Big building to the right with a church bell was a NUNNERY YEARS AND YEARS AGO.

Either an earthquake hit or the war blew out the windows and they never fixed it.

The building is still standing, but without windows……..

We took a WALKING TOUR with a lovely man who spoke MANY languages. For the LIFE of me I cannot recall what happened to the windows! Please forgive me!

Maybe someone reading here knows and can share in the comments BELOW!

Downtown NOTO………..

A church.

With a BAR that sells ICE CREAM and makes GRANITA’s!

BALCONY’s to practice “ROMEO ROMEO where for art thou Romeo.”

DO YOU SEE THE HORSES AND THE HEADS on the balustrades holding the balcony’s?

TALK ABOUT DETAIL!

Noto is constructed of a soft, honey-color TUFA STONE.

The buildings are BAROQUE from the 1600 – 1750’s.

The whole town before this date was struck by an earthquake. It was re-built in the 1600’s.

THE ITALIAN who ‘s wallet slipped out of his pocket here and a nice person pointed it OUT!

COCKTAILS ON THE ROOFTOP TERRACE at our hotel.

YOU decorator types what do you think about all those pillows?

I think the colors work but WAY TOO MANY!

I go back and fourth if I like it or NOT!

Very unusual for me as I am a person WHO KNOWS WHAT SHE LIKES ALMOST IMMEDIATELY!

A DEAD END in our HOTEL!!!!!!

These LIONS are not old, but I thought this was a BEAUTIFUL PLACEMENT!

(LINDA C. I thought of YOU here!)

THE OPERA HOUSE in NOTO, SICILY.

Can you imagine if this was your HOME?

I tend to take it a step further in MY THINKING!

I would BUY IT sight unseen on the interiors.

Would THE STAGE be your kitchen, living room or bedroom?

Take a MOMENT and think about that……………..!

Noto side street dinning just 40 steps from our hotel.

Waiting for my SQUID INK RISOTTO!

Believe me it was DELICIOUS!

THE ONLY THING IS IT STAINS YOUR TEETH FOR A BRIEF TIME!

MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE LEFT THIS PHOTO OUT OF THE TOUR!

I USE TO HAVE ONLY THREE WRINKLES BESIDE MY EYES……………

I counted.

Put a ONE in front of THAT three!

After the RISOTTO came the FISH DISH……….perfect portion as I couldn’t eat much more!

That is it for TODAY!

NOTO from MY EYES……. on our JUNE 2025 trip.

More to come if you are up for it………….

THE ITALIAN WOMAN AT THE TOP OF THIS POST IS 80 YEARS OLD!

DID YOU GUESS RIGHT or were you OFF BY A FEW YEARS?

May I remind you that the ITALIAN women do NOT go to gyms nor diet in general. They eat in moderation but they eat THE GOOD STUFF.They also walk a lot and MOVE.Something I need to do!They also talk a lot and give detail in conversations…………while the arms are MOVING!!!THE WHOLE BODY GETS A WORK-OUT!Funny as this morning I saw a video where we need to swing our arms more as it is GOOD for the BODY organs and toning the under arm!

ENJOY THIS FLEETING SUMMER………….Kids here in Northern California have already started school if you can BELIEVE that!

KEEP SCROLLING DOWNWARD TO LEAVE ME A COMMENT or ASK A QUESTION!

I will RESPOND TO YOU!

HUGS TO ALL,

YOUR CONTESSA,

XXX

PHOTO NOT TAKEN IN NOTO BUT WORTH SHARING!

I am planning a trip to Sicily and will be leaving in 3 weeks!
Did you drive from Noto or Syracuse to Agrigento and then Marasala all in one day? I am also doing a whirlwind tour of Sicily.

How funny you should ask that I just spent an hour uploading photos for the past six months to print and it only took four. I’m having a meltdown at the moment but I will get over this. I just need to walk away from the bloody computer.!!!

It’s fun to feel like we get to travel with you with all the images and beautiful details. I guessed 78 and I was going over the age I really thought. That makes me want to talk, walk, more and enjoy each moment we have. School has started here too, but it’s still really warm in Arizona so we will be in summer for awhile more. Thanks again for the adventure!

I guessed the lady’s age correctly 🙂 Noto is beautiful. I need the name of your hotel maybe my husband and I will go for a weekend break or something. It’s very beautiful. We’re planning on going somewhere a bit cool in September – probably Amsterdam. It feels like a last-minute thing because work has been too busy but it’s calming down a bit.

You can never stop blogging… your eye is so finely honed (could have been a professional photog) and your writing is, of course, uniquely wonderful (the word effervescent comes to mind : ) What a fabulous trip– I cannot imagine the work that went into planning the itinerary and where to stay–but it was perfection. Adore this travelogue and wish it was continuing to other parts of Europe!! It is a treat, with whipped cream and cherry on top, to read your marvelous posts. Hoping the back heals quickly, so hard to do things when it hurts. Inspired by that beautiful woman… need to walk and move more, sitting at a desk at work and at home causes aging I think : ) XOXO

I love all your photos, Elizabeth, so please keep them coming. The patina on the walls, the trim around the doors and windows, and the light fixtures are divine. Never heard of Noto, but it looks like a great place to go. Not as crowded as Tuscany. I’m still so happy you were able to go and other than a fall, that wasn’t serious, physically, you did so well, and I know it was good for your spirits. The beautiful woman… she doesn’t look her age, but I thought she might be in her early 80s. Oh, that I should be so fortunate to look half as good. xoxox, Brenda

What breathtaking photos! That might be the most charming view from a public washroom I have ever beheld. The architecture and attention to detail are exquisite – I remember noticing that when I was in Firenze many years ago. And those patios are really nice; I imagined you and me sitting on one of them with a glass of wine and appetizers. With a cat strolling by, of couse. As to the pillows, I had to think about it. It’s probably very uncomfortable against the back of that bench without them, so they want to make sure there are plenty for each person! They actually need to spread a few of them out, as the rest of the furniture is a bit bland otherwise. Your sister-in-law’s neighbor is beautiful, and you are right: the key to being able to move around is to never stop. I’m so glad you got to take this trip, Contessa. You left your heart in Italy and I bet it was so rejuvenating for you to return, if just for a while.

    NOTO!!! My favorite city!

I LOVE IT! It is all one color because, unlike most cities, it was built all at once when it was completely destroyed by an earthquake! It is all one color stone, and all one style of architecture! We had lunch at your hotel! We rented a villa nearby when we were there for the filming of The White Lotus. It is gorgeous. So happy you saw it!

I guessed her age, I thought she was 82. She has a great, still wrinkle-free face, but there are hidden clues that point to her age. Regardless, she looks great. And what I wrote in your last comment: move, move, move, that’s really crucial for staying healthy and fit even in old age.

Yes, I would imagine all of that has something to do with it especially the food. I keep reading how many preservatives are in our food and how now that almond milk and oat milk are not good for us. Oh my God everything is with pesticides or wheat and other stuff. The Italian has a vegetable garden and the fruit trees are producing this year for the first time so we are eating from our backyard,Basically this summer the lettuce has been sensational so that’s a blessing.

The ink doesn’t stay there very long. You take a few sips of your wine or your water and it will be gone. Poof but it really is delicious on the rice. Thank you for your lovely comment. Hello Contessa,

I too believe in making single family homes out of public buildings, at least in my imagination. As for that opera house, the stage would probably be my library, and perhaps the seating area the stacks. If it is anything like the Paris Opera, the deep underground room complete with organ I could use to store Halloween props.

I’ve decided the box seats will be my closets!!Shoes in one and dresses on a semi-circle rod in another!
      Are you a Halloween Lover?
I always Loved it too!But now few if any kids left to ring my doorbell!
I’m always ready with a big bowl of candy, but it makes me sad if I don’t get at least three trick-or-treaters!!

Elizabeth, I would love to get your hotel information from you and information about the town. It looks so charming. Italy is always my favorite place.

I guessed 80 but only because you said you’ll never believe how old she is so I guess 10 years older than I thought she was!!! but talk about a beauty. Yes I definitely think the food in Europe is different far less preservatives and they do walk so much more than we do. That’s why my mom lived to be 109 she was a big Walker.

Thanks again your trip looks wonderful

Beautiful photos, a lovely town. I did guess 80, they eat the right food and know how to enjoy life. I’m like you in that I imagine places as my house, my daughter and I have fun discussing what we would have where. Looking forward to more photos.

Loved all the photo’s, thank you for sharing. My grandparents are from Sicily,
unfortunately no one knows which town and everyone is dead that could share information. Sad. Would love to visit.

    Carissima Contessa,
Such a feast for the eyes!! Grazie for sharing!! You look positively Radiant in all photos – including the squid ink one! Love the black cat!! I’m surprised they didn’t create a Tromp l’oeil at the dead end of your hotel!
Your Toscana neighbour reminds me of Barbara Eden who is 93..so I guessed 80! I’m getting really good at guessing these days! Women in Europe have the right idea on how to age gracefully!! We all need to take notes!!
    XOXO

I was VERY HAPPY NOT TO BE COOKING THAT IS FOR SURE!The gluten free foods were abundant so that put another smile on my face!
The Italian was very happy too!
I put that cat picture in just for you!!

So much beauty here! I’ll start with your sister-in-law’s neighbor. Yes, I did guess 80’s, but only because you asked and I looked carefully. The neck and teeth always give away one’s age. Still, I should look half the good! Her smile and eyes are what I really notice, and they are full of life.
Chartreuse…you already have that look! I’d say yours is even better. Your hotel looked Devine…the Italian did good.
It must have been hard to leave such a beautiful place.

Always hard to leave EUROPE PERIOD.
      But happy to be home.
The food really got me this trip!
      We just cannot compare!
      It’s simple and very flavorful.
