JANUARY JOYS!

January 6, 2024 110 Comments

A CHILD WITH A CHICKEN…………….PURE BLISS!

WE ALL MADE IT THROUGH THE HOLIDAYS!

HERE WE ARE IN JANUARY 2024.

I took a little break away from social media and found it to be refreshing!

YOU look at it through different eyes when you step away…………

It becomes a SECOND FAMILY of SORTS for many of us and we can share our JOYS and SORROWs and relate to others. It has been a GREAT SOURCE for me I have to say.The only negative I noticed is you do not show up in your followers feed as you aren’t posting as often, so the ALGORITHM may DROP YOU!

MY SON has built a small farm with flowers and animals………….

THIS HAS BEEN MY DREAM FOREVER!

I GUESS SOMETHING RUBBED OFF INTO HIS DNA!

BOTH MY SONS HAVE BARNS!

There is something about kids running around with animals that brings TONS of JOY to both the observer and the child.I think and this is MY OPINION; they turn out to be better people.MORE EMPATHY for humans and animals.A KINDER SOUL if you will.

I follow a few EPILEPSY instagram sites and discovered that dogs are trained to tell you BEFORE a seizure may occur! The dog tells you its coming by barking then positions himself on the floor to break your fall!AMAZING CREATURES and SO SMART!One woman who responded to my question says our breath changes odor before a seizure…………and the dogs pick up on that!

I have FOCAL SEIZURES so no falling as of yet!

MAMA GOAT is checking on those PRINGLES POTATO CHIPS!

SMART ENOUGH NOT TO GRAB THEM FROM LITTLE HANDS……..

The eyes on these goats are STUNNING!

NUMBER ONE SON with his daughter………….

THE FARMER and TABLE ARTISAN

THEODORE sitting upright checking on things!

ANOTHER GREAT PAIR OF EYES!

This chair I got at a THRIFT SHOP in LIVERMORE YEARS AGO!

I used it as my desk CHAIR in my SHOP.

Then I SOLD it to a SOUL SISTER who had the springs re-done.

The seat was questionable!

SHE SOLD IT BACK TO ME AFTER A TIME AS SHE MOVED AWAY.

TODAY the Upholstry is questionable, but I still love it!

I think I paid $40.00 maybe less for this chair and now I am thinking its time to dump it!

Will you help me decide in the comment section below this POST.

A YES or NO WILL DO!

Here I’m in my nightgown and robe and shoes that I use for slippers as well.

Scrubbing the floor as a LARGE BEAST HAD AN ACCIDENT!

I AM LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKE MY MOTHER AS I AGE.

NO MAKE UP AS ITS EARLY MORNING.

YOU GET THE REAL CONTESSA TODAY!

YOU GET THE REAL CONTESSA EVERY POST BUT TODAY IS SKIN DEEP!

THIS LITTLE PIGGY GOT HER EYES AND EARS CLEANED BY ME!

SHE IS THE PERFECT SIZE AS WELL.

A BEAUTY HOLDING ANOTHER BEAUTY NAMED PRINCESS!

NO JUICE FOR YOU MAMA GOAT!

THREE BEAUTIES…………..

ANOTHER CAFTAN FROM THE CHATEAU BEL AGE IN San Diego MADE BY THE UP AND COMING DESIGNER JENNAFER GRACE.THIS WAS GIFTED TO ME AND I WAS ABLE TO WEAR IT OVER MY “OTHER ANIMAL PRINT” TO DINNER!

THE ITALIAN TURNED 64 ON THE SECOND OF JANUARY!

I FOUND MYSELF DOING THE MATH TO SEE HOW LONG WE HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER AND I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT’S BEEN 40 YEARS!

WE MET AT AGE 24………….

64 MINUS 24 EQUALS = 40 RIGHT?

APRIL OF 1984 HE ARRIVED FROM ITALY IN OUR OFFICE WHICH WAS HIDDEN IN THE PRODUCE SECTION OF DOWNTOWN OAKLAND!

WE WORKED FOR THE DISTRIBUTOR OF THE GUCCI ACCESSORY COLLECTION.

WHICH SOLD TO ALL THE DEPARTMENT AND SPECIALITY SHOPS IN AMERICA AND CANADA.

A FUN LITTLE FACT; I WAS IN SALES AND HE WAS IN THE PURCHASING DEPARTMENT AND I WAS ALWAYS SELLING STOCK HE DIDNOT HAVE!!

I DROVE HIM CRAZY!

AS I SHOULD HAVE HAD A LIST OF THE OUT OF STOCK ITEMS BUT I NEVER SEEMED TO GET THAT LIST!

THE CORE GROUP OF THAT COMPANY WAS ONE GIANT FAMILY!

THOSE WERE GOOD TIMES!

THE 1980’s were a VERY GOOD TIME TO BE YOUNG AND WORKING!

I lived in a STUDIO APARTMENT and created an ENTRY HALL I RECALL!

I WAS SO PROUD OF THAT!

THE RENT IN 1984 was $525.00 a month for a STUDIO……….I was close to the BAY so that was expensive at the time! How I remember these things is BEYOND ME!

THIS IS THE WAY I WISH I COULD TRAVEL………….

I HAD A HICCUP BY BEING IN THE WRONG TERMINAL AND AT THE WRONG GATE RECENTLY!

LET’S JUST SAY I MADE IT, BUT AM STILL RECUPERATING DAYS LATER…………..

LET ME SET THE STAGE FOR YOU……. YOUR CONTESSA ALMOST RUNNING WITH TWO PIECES OF LUGGAGE AND A PRINCESS SHOPPING BAG WITH HER HANDBAG STUFFED INSIDE AND A LITTLE PRINCESS IN PINK WHO ROSE TO THE OCCASION AND MADE THE BIG EFFORT CAREFREE!

OUR HOME AWAY FROM HOME RECENTLY AT MY COUSIN’s HOUSE.

I COULD HAVE STAYED ON FOR A FEW WEEKS!

WE HAD AN INTERESTING CONVERSATION ABOUT AGING AND THE ONE STORY HOUSE!IT REALLY IS IDEAL IN MANY WAYS.HE IS A COLLECTOR LIKE I AM SO MY ITALIAN WARNED HIM TO CHECK MY BAG BEFORE WE DEPARTED!

I WANTED TO TAKE THE GUESTHOUSES MATTRESS AND PILLOW!

I FOUND IT SO COMFORTABLE!

PLUS, A COUPLE LION STATUES ON PLINTHS BESIDE THE FIREPLACE!

THANK GOODNESS THERE WAS NO WAY FOR ME TO CARRY THEM!

WE HAD A WONDERFUL VISIT!

NOT LONG ENOUGH, BUT WE WILL BE BACK!

WE ALL NEED A GOOD BRUSH OUT ONCE IN AWHILE!

THIS GUY IS VERY DEMANDING AS WE HAVE OUR ROUTINE DOWN PAT!

NO WONDER I COLLECTED OLD FOOTSTOOLS!

THEY HAVE COME IN SUPER HANDY IN MY 60’S!

ONWARDS, WE GO AND WE ARE ALL SO VERY LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN GIVEN ANOTHER YEAR!

I ADORE YOU ALL AND WISH YOU HEALTH AND HAPPINESS ALWAYS!

YOUR CONTESSA

TO COMMENT KEEP SCROLLING DOWNWARDS AND PLEASE WEIGH IN ON THAT RED CHAIR!

Happy New Year! (and Happy Birthday to G!) 🙂

The picture of Charlotte with the chicken is so sweet! A diminutive Duchess of Devonshire! Takes after her Nonna! <3

I just came from visiting J and her little dove. The time I get to spend with her is just magical.

That new caftan looks stunning on you, tho they all do. “You wear it well” as the Rod Stewart song goes. Beautiful as always…

Oh, my, that first pic of your granddaughter holding the chicken is such a delight. What a treasure to have a property with animals! Definitely his mother’s son.

    Keep the chair.

I love your latest caftan! So pretty on you. Your cousin’s home and property looks so beautiful! I take that is in southern California.

Happy New Year, LA CONTESSA! Here’s to another year together on the ‘net’. We certainly are lucky to get another one. Cheers!

    Hi Elizabeth,
Well it’s already been decided that you will keep the chair. Good! I say keep what you love and dump the rest. Only you know what has a place in your heart.
Charlotte is getting so grown up and adorable and looks like a mini you! Love the chickens and the goat (I’ve always wanted one!) and your son’s tractor. All of it great.
40 years passes so quickly it’s truly hard to believe.
My rent back in 198t in Mt. View was $750, I thought I was living the high life! But my goodness that was a lot back then, and now it would be a miracle to find anything at that price!
You always look so uniquely you and glamorous even when scrubbing the floor!
All the best to you and your family for a wonderful 2024!

    Dear Contessa,
So good to see the pictures of your granddaughter. You have had a very interesting life and still do with your Italian. I came to Canada after high school for a sabbatical as we did back in the day of 1971. I met my husband about three days after I arrived in Vancouver, BC. We were married 10 months later in Denmark ??. Actually we eloped to my mother’s disapproval. I was 21 and my husband was 20 and my parents didn’t know him. Well 51 years later after moving back between Canada and Denmark several time , we are settled in Burnaby, BC and grateful for being well and living amongst good people. I feed humming birds year round . I understand your love of pigs and I ‘m so glad you got a second one after Banksy. It was because of Banksy that I found your site. You are creative and eccentric in a most wonderful way. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Happy New Year from Canada ??

How fun to find a post from the Contessa in my e-mail! I am supposed to be painting in the new kitchen, but read your blog instead. What a great post! So many things to look at and think about. First of all, you look GREAT! Even cleaning up the floor. There is a radiance about you that comes through, even with no makeup. You must be feeling better! Happy Birthday to Giampiero – looks like you had a good time celebrating. I laughed over him saying, “Stop making our house look like a store.” I know you have already received an overwhelming response about the chair; I like the idea of putting it in another room and seeing if you miss it. Yes, you have a history with it, but are you feeling the need to pare down? I like “stuff” as much as you do, so I have such a hard time letting any of it go. I also like Marie Kondo’s attitude: does it bring you joy? OR is it utilitarian enough that you need it? I am sentimental about objects and furniture, like you. What fun to see the little farm! And to see the little princess enjoying it, as well as her ride on the luggage and the tractor. She is precious and I am so happy that you are spending time together. And happy that you got to travel to your cousin’s as well. May this portend a healthy, happy, and soul-fulfilling New Year for you and yours. Let’s chat soon.

    Hi Elizabeth,
Your granddaughter is darling, it’s nice to see she lives on a farm and enjoys animals. I so agree if’d so healthy to have animals a part of children’s lives. It gives them something to love and care for. The pet usually responds back too. All around it’s a good thing.
Happy belated birthday to your honey. Loved hearing how you met, Back to back you have conquered the world together. You are fortunate you have one another and are present for each other. You learn a lot when your health declines.
Glad you decided not to swipe anything precious while you were away visiting family,

Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come whispering, it will be happier.

I go with Marie Kondo: If you look at something in your home and it makes you smile, then keep it…. if it doesn’t, then remove it. Someone else may want it – I have a wonderful Put and Take building in town for locals to put and take household items. PS: I like the lipstick you have on in the restaurant.

Happy new year to you and your human and animal family. Good Theodore pic today enjoying your chair – keep it please, it looks like it has Theodore’s vote also. Thank you for this lovely historical post giving a time line of your good times in the 80’s. So the Italian is Capricorn and you a Leo, interesting combo. I used to be very interested in Astrology in the 80’s. Took classes, read books and made decisions based on astrology. My interest today is cutting hair. I mean self cutting, primarily due to unhappiness with cut/style received. So, having spent time on you tube and gotten instructed I will try it myself.

Happy new year, Contessa! My vote is to keep the chair and refurbish it if necessary- refinish the wood, fresh fabric and padding. Or maybe find a friend who would like it. My husband once took a chair we no longer needed and made a footstool out of it. Other bloggers I follow are Cindy Hattersley Design, Jennifer of A Well Styled Life, Susan of Une Femme d’un Certain Âge, Greetje of No Fear of Fashion and Sue Burpee of High Heels in the Wilderness. And I often look at their friend bloggers too. Thanks for asking!

    Dear Elizabeth…
What a nice post to read this morning. I’m in hospital for some Covid maybe… first test said yes, one today said no. Anyway something not great with breathing etc.
Nevertheless I’ll get better! Look how well you are! It looks like a fabulous holiday adventure with your princess. Yes, kids raised with animals learn empathy early.
My tree is up as I did have Covid but at home and so our gifts are still under tree. Then gotcsicker and went to hospital for two days then came home for 6 days and returned yesterday again to hospital. My 76 bday is Tuesday and maybe I’ll be home and not contagious… Xmas and bday together.
The chair , does it still bring you joy? I remember a chair I’ve missed for years. I tend to recall everything I should have bought and things I should have held onto.
I’m writing so early cuz steroids make me too awake. I’ve not slept since Thursday night. Just a nap this morning. Soon I can order my breakfast! That’s exciting. Sure would love your cappuccino. Not here, although their coffee was very good basic American style.
I loved this post and your happy family. Have an amazing healthy new year., xo

Well hello there! This is me rewriting my message to you. I couldn’t find the original one either. So weird. The winds here in Vegas have been so strong and loud all night long. Maybe my message got blown away!
For me, it’s a flip of the coin about that chair of yours. Functional comfort v nostalgia. I can’t decide on this one!
It sure looks like it was a very cheery and Merry Christmas Season! I think everybody should spend time with animals. We would live in a better world if we all could comprehend life with empathy for all creatures great and small. I know for certain that my next chapter will be surrounded by beautiful vegetable gardens and lots of animals scampering at my feet.
Sending all my best Tanti Auguri wishes to your Italian for his birthday! Auguri x10!

Happy 2024 – doesn’t that sound weird – what has happened to time, I thought a year was supposed to be 12 months but now it seems about 4 months instead !

Blogs are a wonderful source of inspiration and a laugh or two aren’t they? Of course I follow Cindy Hattersley but I also enjoy Shannon Ables and there are many whose regularly posted reels are much like a blog like A Women Called George and MaryAnn over at My Midhurst Life.

Dear Elizabeth, Happy and Healthy New Year. What a lovely happy blog today, so nice to see your family and the chickens are charming. I love to hear a group of chickens clucking together ,they sound just like old ladies talking! Keep the chair, it has lots of memories, I nearly always regret getting rid of nice things if you have room , keep as much as you can! That includes old long time favourite clothes, I have sent many things to thrift shops and then a few months later bitterly regretted it! Old things are the best things if you ask me, including people ! Many best wishes from Judy in Brighton UK ( age 84)

Hello Contessa, At last we are re-connected! I have missed your blog. I would keep the chair if you use it and it is comfortable–the cat seems to like it (a little scratch coat and wax would do wonders for the wood)!
    .
Your opening statement “A child with a chicken” seemed familiar–I had heard that cadence or structure before. Then I realized it was “A damsel with a dulcimer” from Coleridge’s Kubla Kahn.

The leopard caftan is wonderful, reminds me of my dream pajamas at age 8, leopard and footed. I loved dancing and leaping around in them, ha.
So enjoyed the story of you and your husband meeting. The 80’s were such a fun time, for those of us our age. Happy birthday to your husband! My 64th is in 5 weeks. My husband and I met at a party the week of Christmas 1980, second date New Year’s day, married by August. 43 years!

The only thing that matters about the chair is if it is comfortable. If yes, keep. If no, say goodbye!
It looks like you had some wonderful family time this season. I’m so glad! I spent some time with my “boys” and had a wonderful “pretend we’re rich” trip with my Sweetheart. Now it’s back to some serious work. My tree is down, but the ornaments are in a large pile on the side board. I dislike trying to wrap them all and Tetris them all into the storage boxes. Do you have a good storage system?
Happy Birthday GP!! (I forgot his is the same day as my ex). Mine is next weekend. One more year until Medicare. I’m already looking for new providers so I can leave the K system.
