TAORMINA…..PART TWO!

July 21, 2025 91 Comments

If you read PART 1 FLORENCE we also were in TAORMINA, SICILY which is very quaint and an awesome view of the IONIAN SEA.

We stayed in a small hotel high up on the hill.We had rented a car at the airport which we just parked at the hotel.WE took a taxi to town.It was the easiest and most practical way.Plus, I love chatting with the taxi drivers.Uber in ITALY is MORE expensive I was told.Plus it required another APP!I don’t know about YOU but I do not want ONE MORE APP!

Here is our rental car ORANGE!I couldn’t have asked for a BETTER color in SICILY!Here they assist you with the car. Show one how to turn on and off and help with luggage.ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK GOD I WAS NOT DRIVING!

I may never have gotten it out of PARK.

MY FIRST LEMON GRANITA BELOW!

Waiting for my SECOND GRANITA of the day………

VELVET AND YELLOW FRAMES with photos of Celebrities!

I KIND OF GRAVITATED TO THIS BAR!

I WONDER WHY?

FRAMES, YELLOW, VELVET OUTSIDE!

I LOVE IT ALL………..

Plus, a customer in my antique shop once said my shop “was full of WANDERLUST!”

THIS IS THE Main Street IN TAORMINA.

Churches and restaurants and tourist shops line the street with food and fabulousness.

THE OLD THEATER where they were setting up for a film festival the next day.We were in a restaurant where we saw MICHAEL DOUGLAS and a TALL BLONDE!The first thing that popped into my head was “THATS NOT HIS WIFE!”.It came across my phone the next day that he was there for a FILM FESTIVAL and receiving an award. The TALL blonde was a PRODUCER in the film industry.ITALIAN of course!

THIS IS VERY OLD STUFF……….third century B.C.

Built by the GREEKS and the ROMANS.

Gives you an idea of the height of the walls.

THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MARVEL TO SEE!

NO HOME DEPOTS.

NO POWER TOOLS.

THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL MAN MADE BY HAND!

I WAS HUFFING AND PUFFING BY THE TIME I GOT HERE.

THIS WAS A REST SPOT FOR ME and as much as I wanted to go up to the TOP I knew it was BEST to enjoy the view of the SEA from HERE!

MY HAT served me well.

$19.99 at CVS.

When is was not in use it was used as a section inside my Basket Bag!

I turned it upside down and it carried the phone and a little bottle of water.

I am using it still as a divider inside the basket.

EASY ACCESS!

THE AMBIANCE WAS FANTASTIC.

LOOK At those HEAD VASES AS LAMPS!

I MAY NEED TO DO THAT IN MY KITCHEN!

Did you know I wanted to be an ARCHEOLOGIST in the 9th grade?

I DID!

From the LACE CURTAINS to the ceramic heads and succulents……………..A balcony to stop and admire!

This is where we saw Michael Douglas walk in………….

He was SHORT!!I mean really short which surprised me, but very generous with his time shaking the owners hands.Seemed like he knows everyone there!THE ITALIAN would not let me SNAP a photo when his back was turned!MY HUSBAND IS VERY PROPER and OLD SCHOOL which I ADORE about HIM!!!

MY OUTFIT is by Bryn Walker in BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA and the shoes are BIRDIES.

NECKLACE by ANGELA CAPUTI.

YES, exactly what I was thinking” I WOULD LOVE TO OWN THIS!”

This is where they filmed WHITE LOTUS if you watched that mini series!

THE BEACH SCENES.

THERE IS AN ELEVATOR that takes you down to the water and beach.

A GROTTO that we went into by boat!

LOOK at the COLORS!

They used these GROTTOS during THE WAR………….WWII.

I couldn’t understand all he was saying but got that much!

MORE VIBRANT IN PERSON!

ISOLA BELLA,we did not get there by foot, however the owner of the boat IL CAPITANO let us swim around a bit!I could jump in NO PROBLEM ,but getting me up and back onto the boat was a CHALLENGE!I had ONE PUSHING FROM BEHIND and the OTHER PULLING from THE BOAT!

IT WAS COMICAL FOR SURE!

I turn 65 on JULY 22. This year was a real challenge for me.

As I mentioned in the First Post on the trip I slipped in SICILY about 8 days into our trip!I did not hit the ground but twisted the back something awful.I am wearing a BACK BRACE as of TODAY and am on heavy duty pain meds.NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!

With the taxi rides in ROME no cushions in those back seats and a MAJOR POTHOLE HIT I managed to really do damage to my LOWER BACK!Somehow, I kept walking those warm streets and seeing the sights.ONLY ONE DAY DID I HAVE TO STAY IN BED AND RECOUP and I think that was more the HEART STUFF than back. The worst part for me was laying down in bed and getting up.

I was calling my chiropractor from the ROME airport! After visiting him four times in two weeks after we got back; I had to go to URGENT CARE and get more X-ray done. They found my L-1 was fractured, however that was not the cause of MY PAIN NOW.That was an old fracture.Have no idea how that happened or when but the last few years I have been complaining about wearing BRAS!

No matter the size it hurt!

Can VERTEBRAE just break if you have osteoporosis?

For the last three years I have done the RECLAST DRIP LINE.

SO, I HAVE SIGNED UP FOR MEDICARE and ready to see what happens next!

ANY suggestions from you DEAR READERS On WHAT HAPPENS NEXT WITH THE BODY AND HOW I SHOULD SPEND MY TIME!?SLOW DOWN OR SPEED UP………let me know how you are spending the GOLDEN YEARS!

I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING A GOOD SUMMER or WINTER where ever you reside!

TO LEAVE ME A MEASSAGE KEEP SCROLLING DOWNWARD!

I WILL ANSWER EACH AND EVERY COMMENT.

I PROMISE.

PS. For years I spoke about those EYE EPISODES I WOULD HAVE. I would lose my sight and feel faint and the grand final was a headache for one to two days.THEY ARE GONE AFTER 10 YEARS of SEARCHING FOR AN ANSWER!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!

AS of APRIL 13 th 2025 I had my LAST EYE EPISODE!

A CERVICAL SPINE CHIROPRACTOR FIXED ME.

TOOK ABOUT 8 MONTHS but MY ATLAS NOW IS HOLDING IN PLACE.

IF YOU SUFFER GROM HEADACHES OR VERTIGO, ETC I HIGHLY RECOMMEND A CERVICAL SPINE DOCTOR.NOTHING THEY DO HURTS.I would be happy to share more if you want email me at iolacontessa@gmail.com

My gosh, I cannot believe I missed this one! It must have been posted when I was in Arizona. Hopefully, you still get notified of comments. Those head vases were also featured in “The White Lotus.” I recognized them right away. I love that you got to SWIM! You look so cute in your hat in the water, and the description of your getting back into the boat was hilarious! I’m really enjoying all of these photos. It has been years since I was in Italy, and I have wanted to return every since. It’s such a beautiful place. How exciting that you got to see Michael Douglas! I wouldn’t have taken a picture, but I sure would have stared. I’m so glad you got to take this trip and hope you are on the mend.

As to after-65 advice, mine is, keep going. Keep moving. Stay flexible (those two are a challenge for me.) Keep doing things that interest you. Don’t worry about what is conventional for someone of your age. Try and find beauty and fun in each day. Appreciate and immerse yourself in moments of calm and contentment. Give yourself credit for all you have accomplished. That’s all I can think of for now. Glad I found this post!

Happy belated birthday, LA CONTESSA! Seeing your celebrations on instagram was wonderful. The photos here are gorgeous and what a trip! I’m so jealous. Good for you for taking a dip in the sea, such tonic for the body and soul. So sorry about your back problem. I hope the brace is a temporary thing. Sending healing vibes to you from Western Canada.
    Ciao for now.

The yellow you two are wearing is perfect in that photo. I love that he didn’t let you take a photo of MD. Such a class act. I couldn’t zoom in the the lamps with the faces, I loved all the buildings and your $20 hat was a hit. I love you happiest belated birthday ?

Buon compleanno, Elizabeth! (mi scusa, ma sono in ritardo!). I absolutely loved reading about your trip in Sicily and seeing your photos. I have sent you a photo from Siena for your birthday. It has been cold and rainy and gloomy — sometimes it’s just mizzling, other times it has poured so seeing your photos greatly cheered me up. I have a drawer full of 50s costume jewellery — I’ll have to sort through it and see what treasures I might have! In anticipation of someday having knee surgery, I was advised by an orthopedist that I should use one of those little foot pedals (like a bicycle but only for feet) so I can strengthen my leg muscles which will greatly help recovery. Perhaps one such gadget would be useful for you — you could sit in a chair on your patio and use it as you wished. Available on amazon…I’ve got mine but have not yet tried it out… con un grad abbraccio! A.

I am so glad you had such a fabulous time during this trip. The fall sicks but you kept going, which is great. It wouldn’t have made sense to spend your holiday in bed. I know your birthday was in July and wanted to surprise you with a card or something but life got in the way. As I’ve mentioned, my in-laws were visiting for the first 7 days and then I had a lot of house cleaning and laundry to do and work is still extra hectic. I need some time off 🙂

Sicily is gorgeous. It’s so close but we hardly ever visit. I guess I should correct that.

Angela Caputi! I about died when I visited her store in Florence. The most creative color combos and stunning pieces. I bought bangles and love clunking around in them. You are looking fab in her necklace and fab in the sea! Way to go braving the climb in and out.
All I can say is spend time with your grandchildren! The best medicine for any ache or pain I’ve found.
Wishing you a hundred more birthdays, and the more of them celebrated in Italy the better. I celebrated my 70th at “Casa Gregorio” with my family in tow, cooking lessons every day and a field trip every day. It was the best ever.
    Stay strong and determined!

    HI THERE CONTESSA!
That for sure was a memorable trip you/and the Italian had. He did such a great job of planning! I’m sure it added 10 years to your life!
Made by hand – incredible what people did centuries ago by hand.
You asked what happens next with the body – well for me (aged 76) it is quirky things. Like the other day it felt like I had rocks in my shoes = painful to walk. Well it was all to do with my back! Got that sorted out. Then having another 2 car accidents within 10 years does not help the body.
Thank goodness your eye episodes were resolved.
Anyway, when I was celebrating my 63rd birthday I met a billionaire – yes a billionaire = local business man who told me “the best is yet to come”. So true. There is so much to enjoy with each day/ year.
Spend time and just enjoy as each day unfolds.
Yesterday I spoke to a 95 year old friend – to hear her was so invigorating as she has such a zest for life. I felt so energized after talking to her = life is good.

    Happy Birthday Contessa,
Isn’t July absolutely the best month for a birthday! I somehow reached age 69 with a squint toward next July when I hopefully capture 70! Whatever all that may mean. Love your fashions chosen for Italy. So majestic and comfortable. You look so beautiful, especially in the settings. I would like to tour an ancient theater one day. Back in High School studying Theatre History with Nancy Norris–I dreamed of how drama productions were enacted and the joy of being in the audience. Wonderlust and Wanderlust. I heard a rumour that you might attend the Ari Seth Cohen event in Sebastopol at the Center for the Arts on Saturday, August 23rd at 2 PM to 4 PM. I am bringing my Advanced Pets book which Andrea Serrahn has signed. I hope to add your signature on your featured pages if you will be there. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous photos. I’m thrilled to hear that your eye concerns have behaved.

HappyBirthday dear Contessa! You share the same birthday as my sweet Mother so you are very special indeed! I have loved your travel diary to Italy with your Italian. I’m so happy you were able to make this journey as it will be a delightful memory of your 65th year. You will have other adventures to celebrate in the years ahead. I’m sorry you have serious health issues and I hope you are able to get some answers to these issues and feel better very soon. My mom did have simultaneous fractures of her vertebrae with her osteoporosis. Just her weight when standing could cause a fracture or when she sneezed or coughed. I hope your treatments will help. Please keep posting-you have a great talent writing and potographing that draws your reader into your world. It’s magic!

Contessa ~ my first time to comment, but I want to let you know how very much I enjoy your posts! You have such style, and wit, and so many wonderful friends. I, too, just returned from Taormina. I was on a cruise through Croatia and Italy with my 53 year old daughter. Everything about Italy is just enchanting. I will be 85 on Saturday, and was concerned the trip might be too challenging ~ instead it was invigorating! I take Prolia injections, and it is helping with bone growth. I also have Botox injections every 3 months in my neck and shoulders to help with arthritis and headaches. I do yoga, and just got a new puppy who keeps me on my toes. What works for me is to just keep active, open, and enjoy life! Thanks for you…….

Happy birthday. You look joyful and happy. Love the outfits, especially seeing the glimpse of others in very casual clothing.
I am a month away from 74 and am having treatment for osteoporosis at a speciality clinic affiliated with a medical school/teaching hospital. I can’t say enough positive things about the quality of care and expertise of these folks.
I found out the hard (pun intended) way that almost every medical speciality treats osteoporosis, yet most do not focus on it.
Keeping active as your body allows is key. Also take time to enjoy the small things that bring you pleasure. Aging is a privilege that we often lose sight of.

Always love your posts, and this trip most of all… fabuloso!!! So glad you were able to make the Grand Tour after so many years.. a great way to welcome the next chapter, which I am still trying hard to postpone or deny–retirement–I will be 71 soon and still working full-time, but a voice is beginning to whisper that’s it’s time 🙂 I think that’s how I’ve tried to avoid the reality of aging (and I love the high level of interaction with the incredible people I work for). Also have two other books started but have not had the time/energy to write, so another reason to hang up the ‘gone fishing’ sign : ) I think every person navigates these years uniquely, but the physical and emotional challenges are experienced by everyone. As someone said, growing old is not for sissies. Hoping most of all that we may become grandparents at last! Anyway, my birthday wish is that your back gets better and clear sailing health-wise AND please never stop blogging!! It is a gift you give to all of us. Much love from the hinterlands of Florida.. Hi Elizabeth,
Happy birthday, hopefully you are not in too much discomfort today. I don’t know how you handle all the pain and not get blue. Your Italian must be your big cheerleader and support honey that takes care of you and your spirit.
Do you have on-going pain in your neck? If so please share with me what you do to help you.
So glad the eye issues have now stopped. What a scary thing to experience, then those bad headaches that follow.
I enjoyed all the pictures of your holiday. Wow, you got into the water too, so brave if you.
I’ve been on Prolia injections since March 2015. Every 6 months. I feel it’s helped me. Reclast has been around forever. My Rheumatologist did not want to put me on that. My neighbor was on it, two infusions. It was not helping her. She stopped it. I think everyone responds differently to medicine. Are you seeing a Rheumatologist for the Reclast? As you know the DEXA scan if it’s accurate is pretty telling. My Rheumatologist said I think there is a 10% error factor to consider or something that that.
Yay, Medicare for you. It’s important to get a very good secondary to Medicare. Good luck with getting set up. It’s a big decision and going with the right plan pays off.

So happy to read and see your post on the Italy trip this morning. Also, I’m sorry that you had some mishaps, and resulting back pain. I hope you have a Happy Birthday and
    recover soon. Yes, keep moving.

I am very fortunate in that I have always had to take walks
and hikes (when younger) outside to enjoy the plants and
the sunshine. Nature and walking have helped my chronic
depression so, at 85, its built into my psyche to take walks every day. I spent 2 weeks on an Alaska cruise with 3 friends
in June and it was delightful but stressful getting to the port in Seattle. We flew from Santa Barbara. I’ve been home almost a month, and finally getting back some energy.
I want to continue living in my home and gardens so
I’m motivated to keep busy and active, with my women’s group friends. My husband of 28 years passed away 2 years ago.

I have also done yoga for many years, since I was in my early
30’s. Now the stretching is also a daily habit, plus doing my
neck exercises. My cervical C 3 and 4 are pressing together so the ortho doc ordered P.T. a few years ago and I have to do the exercises every day. I have Prolia injections every 6 months and they have improved my bones density to
    osteopenia.

Best wishes that you continue on your healing path.
    XO

And yes, I have watched all seasons of The White Lotus and love it. I want to go back to Italy and see Sicily for the first time. Looks so wonderful. As for aging, I think my best advice (I’m 72) is eat healthy, exercise, interact with people, keep an inquiring mind. Thank you for sharing the trip.

Happy Birthday Elizabeth, 65 is a wonderful age. Just keep on keeping on! For me, focus is everything. I can see lots of what is wrong but as soon as I pivot to what’s right my body relaxes and I feel better (at 85). EFT (tapping) works for me the best.
So thrilled to see your fabulous style in Italy. Most tourists are easily recognizable: trainers, uninspired clothing and crossbody bags. The one Muslim woman in your photograph looked wonderful with her outfit as did you in all your photos. Great idea with your hat!! Thanks for that tip.

Glad to hear that you have signed up for medicare- be certain to also sign up for your gap insurance – a PPO plan. It sounds like you will want to be in a position to select your specialists. I hear AARP and Blue Shield are good for northern California. I have Aetna PPO. I do NOT recommend it, although it was fine while I was healthy.

As I read this stunning post, it is your birthday! Buon compleanno, Young Lady!!!! What a beautiful trip, I’m so happy for you. I love the photo of you in the sea. I can imagine how wonderful it must have felt. As to whether to speed up or slow down; I recommend building strength and flexibility (weight training and yoga) to get through the rest of our lives. Think Tortoise & the Hare… slow and steady wins the race! It’s been invaluable – I was getting too weak to lift my Cuisinart pots and iron skillet, and to squat down for that can of tomatoes on the bottom shelf, then get back up! Now it’s easy again. Salut!

I am absolutely impressed with you on the trip at 65. Look at all you are doing! And you jumped into the water! That is what would scare me. I wouldn’t care if they needed a crane to get me back in the boat, how lovely it would be to swim in that ocean. I have balance issues and the movement of the ocean makes me sink – a real risk of drowning. We all have our issues now. I will soon be 70. So my suggestion to you is to do everything you can. ‘Speed up or slow down’ maybe isn’t the real question. The question is whether we continue to gently push ourselves out of our comfort zones so that we LIVE until we are not capable or it is the very end. LIVE, Contessa. Whatever gives you joy.

Contessa, What a beautiful trip, back pain aside. How wonderful for you to travel to Italy with your beloved. Love story indeed you two. When my husband and I retired we were given advice about travel and activities. The three phases are
Go-Go, Slow-Go and No-Go. We alternate Go and Slow, but need a bit more rest after bigger trips. We are hoping we can make one more trip to Paris as Notre Dame had not reopened and Eiffel Tower was closed for painting. I hope you get relief with treatments for your pain. Thank you for sharing photos of your trip.

First of all, happy, happy birthday (for you, it’s today, as I write this!). It’s also my mom’s birthday, today – she’s a couple of decades older than us (I just turned 65, too, nine days ago) but she is still going strong. I wish the same for you!

I LOVED your photos because I just read a book set in Taormina. It was a romance novel that I should NOT have read – the only redeeming parts for me were the descriptions of that beautiful place, and now thanks to you, I’ve seen it! I told my husband that we must go – he’s been wanting to go back to Italy and so hopefully a Sicilian trip is in the not-too-distant future.

I’ve just retired and am also figuring out what to do. So far it’s been a little bit of travel (Arizona for a wedding, Paris/London, and a few trips back to the Midwest to see my family, where I am right now). I’m also doing a lot of reading. I think my next project is to start writing – I suppose that means I want to be like you, Contessa!

A final note, on the MIchael Douglas sighting – we saw Ryan Seacrest at a Hawaiian airport years ago and I was shocked by how short he was (as you said, “I mean really short”). It’s an interesting illusion that celebrities look so much taller on our screens, isn’t it? Is it our imagination or just good camera work?

Again, wishing you a happy birthday and much improved health.

For me, nothing can beat Italy and their islands. Next time you should visit Capri.
It’s completely different to Sicily, which latter is the rustic one and full of history and ancient monuments and Capri I would call it the female side of Sicily. Full of tenderness, charm and more.
You have asked slow down or speed up. To prevent more bone pain, heart problems and all the other shit , definitely speed up even when it hurts.
65 is still a wonderful period in life (said by a 79 year old) and an age you should live in full. Have a healthy, happy and adventurous year ahead. Big hug

Hi! Despite your health issues, it sounds like your trip was beautiful. I have a question. Your osteoporosis sounds really serious. I am wondering why a chiropractor would be a good fit with such delicate, fragile bones. I suppose it is a fear of mine projecting! I’d be afraid they would break me. I’m 74, I’ve been diagnosed with mild osteoporosis. So far treating without specific osteo meds. Things like hormones (I wasn’t taking before) MORE protein, AlgaeCal, etc. We’ll see if it is enough at this stage. Right now I am trying to figure out why I am always exhausted. I am starting to suspect Adrenal insufficiency. It sounds dramatic, but may make sense. I donated a left kidney, which predisposes one to AI. I just discovered that. Plus I have hashimoto’s. We’ll see. All to say this getting old is complicated!! It does sound like you are in very good hands and I will hope to hear good things.

WHAT THEY DO IS PUT WARM TABS ON YOU TO HELP MANIPULATE.THERE IS NO HARD OR HARSH MOVEMENTS.MOSTLY re-algining the back with the legs and tapping the bones into place.Nothing hurts when he works on me.Those diseases you mention are both ENERGY TAKERS I believe……..check with your doctor. The percentage of women who have osteoporosis over 64 years is 27%.It is part of the aging process………and I DRANK TONS OF MILK AS A CHILD AND YOUNG ADULT!

      I bought VERY LITTLE LESLIE!
      HORRORS……..
There was not much to buy! Of course, we were in the touristy spots so maybe that was the challenge.I did buy a necklace, a Caftan and a few gifts for the children in my LIFE thats it!
I wonder why I was put on RECLAST and not PROLIA?I shall ask!
THANK YOU! IT WAS A GOOD DAY!
