May 7, 2025 110 Comments

HAPPY MAY!

This is called a ZELDA dress but I would NEVER wear a short dress.

So, I wear it as a TOP!

My legs are not ON DISPLAY!

EVER!

I inherited my Mother’s Varicose veins and Now HER KNEES HAVE SHOWN UP ON MY KNEE CAPS!

I take it all in STRIDE!

I AM LUCKY TO BE HERE and she isnot.

Lucky to have THESE DAILY REMINDERS OF HER!

MY TOP can be found at COTTAGE BY DESIGN in Placentia, California.

TEXT TRISH saying CONTESSA SENT ME……….she is a LOVELY HUMAN.

1-714-350-3187.

The Item I speak of above was priced at $110.00.

Trish can be found on Instagram under Cottagebydesign.

If you are a PILLOW FREAK GO TAKE A LOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A BEAUTY in full REGALIA!

I have a funny story to share with YOU ALL.

My health insurance GOT CANCELLED!

Due to signing up for Medicare.

Long story short.

Some IDIOT at the ITALIAN’s union tapped the wrong button!

CANCELLED MY HEALTH INSURANCE that I use NOW!

Medicare is an insurance once we HIT 65 here in the USA for those of you lIVING ABROAD.

GOLDEN CELEBRATION; I think is this roses name.

It really is more yellow not PEACH!

ANYHOW, let me share a GOOD story.

So, I went in for MY LAST PAP SMEAR of MY LIFE!

Did you know once you HIT 65 NO more SPREADING THE LEGS and bracing for that COLD TOOL that CRANKS OPEN that area down yonder? As long as you have been NEGATIVE for that virus they have been hunting for for YEARS you are done with THAT DOCTORS APPOINTMENT!

I had NO IDEA………..

I celebrated with a glass of PROSECCO that night!

LOOK AT THIS CREATURE!

VISITING MY GARDEN…………….looks like a BUNNY with WINGS!

Look at his ANTENNAE not to be over looked his FURRY BODY and LEGS!!

HE WAS ENORMOUS.

Twice the size of a MONARCH BUTTERFLY.

FOOD FOR THE GOATS, but first let me share with you more of the MEDICAL SAGA I encountered with NO INSURANCE!

I needed a refill of medications.50 pills to be exact which will get me through almost two months.

The medicine is called JARDIANCE for the heart.

I tried to order by phone. No can DO cause I had no INSURANCE.

SO, I need to wait two weeks as insurance starts on the FIRST of the MONTH SO SAYS SOMEONE.

OKAY,I have enough pills to wait.

I call MAY FIRST.

NOPE NO INSURANCE.

I wait SIX DAYS.

I can get pills but they cannot be mailed to me.

I need to pick up.

OKAY, I can do THAT.

Get message on my text messages that they are ready for PICK UP to the tune of ONE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND SIXTY DOLLARS plus THIRTY TWO CENTS!

$1260.32

50 pills…………..

AM I WORTH IT?

I MARCH UPSTAIRS TO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

ONE PHONE CALL and back down I went.

EVERYTHING TAKEN CARE OF I HOPE!

IT REALLY WAS TOO EASY……….I’m certain there will be a HICCUP later in the saga!

There have been many phone calls regarding this SITUATION which is supposedly resolved.

It seems the MORE HIGH TECH WE BECOME THE LESS EFFICIENT!

WE attended an event from noon to 3 last weekend.

These creatures were off to the side and I made a BEE LINE FOR THEM!

I WAS SMITTEN IMMEDIATELY!

So, its an outside event and we know the hosts only.

There is an empty chair and I ask the first group if I can sit down with them.

The response was “NO we are saving that chair!”

Okay, I understood someone was coming so I walk away, but hey I’m trying to be nice and socialize!

Can I sit there as I point to another chair and a different group of people?

NO!!

Chants the GROUP!

I JUST CRACKED UP and sat down by the goats.

WE HAVE LOST OUR SENSE OF COMMUNITY PEOPLE!

I understand the NEED to save a friends chair, but hey look around for another chair to pull up to the GROUP PEOPLE!I am so tired of who we have become. As another friend stated yesterday,

“What has happened? WE ARE SO BROKEN AS A SOCIETY!”

They were HAPPY TO SIT WITH ME and I them.

MAYBE it was MY OUTFIT?

(BRYN WALKER SPRING 2024)

TOO MUCH FOR THE WINE TASTING AT NOON?

I did leave THE HAT at HOME as it looked like rain when we left…………

SO take that out of the EQUATION!

THE “NECK SITUATION” did travel with me to the winery.

So, what do you think for a day time event?

Over dressed, too much, color not BRIGHT enough?

Tell me what I did wrong PLEASE!

Photo above is down in my backyard.

The creek area that I have tried for years to make into a MEADOW!

But YOU KNOW WHO loves to mow it all down before one flower can BLOOM!

I would like to SEE IT BLOOM just ONCE IN MY LIFE!

That is it from me today. It is MAY and its going to get chilly here.

I have a new neighbor who has never had a birthday party before so what am I doing later this week?

I am having a couple of ladies over for cake and tea.

Let there BE SUNSHINE!

As always thanks for reading along.

TO LEAVE ME A COMMENT keep scrolling DOWNWARDS………….

I answer ALL COMMENTS and the EMOJI’s DO NOT WORK on the BLOG!

Those symbols turn into QUESTION MARKS on my blog, so NO HEARTS AND KISSES for me!!

THANKS PEOPLE…………

I have been doing this since AUGUST 11, 2009.

IT cost me $2,000.00 to get set up!

WAS IT WORTH IT?

FOR ME IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL OUTLET TO SHARE MY JOY OF TAKING PHOTOS AND MY LIFE STORIES.ALSO, IT WAS A GOOD WAY FOR ME TO KEEP TRACK OF MY MEDICAL SYMPTOMS THAT KEPT CREEPING IN AND PUTTING A SNAFU INTO MY STEP!I went from owning an antique shop to posting about what I wore and what I did. Many of you found it amusing!I found it amusing that so many of you cared to follow me and recognized me clear across the United States!I realized a few years in that what I wore was not the NORM for the average woman so I couldn’t do the OVER 50 FASHION THING!There were other blogs to help you get dressed.I LOVED the Advanced Style movement and appalled it from the get go.It has been 16 years of me SHOUTING AT YOU and you RESPONDING with LOVE for the most part!

YOU ALL HAVE BEEN AMAZING WITH YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND HELP OVER THE YEARS!

I THANK YOU for that.

I am running out of steam and photos to share, but I will let you know when the LAST POST IS WRITTEN.

BE WELL.

HEALTH IS EVERYTHING as I have found out the hard way.

    not overdressed, appropriately casual.
re genetics, i can relate. now i understand why i never liked the way i looked (guys thought i was pretty/exotic, & i thought they were delusional). many yrs later i look so much like my mom–way too much. guess i saw it back then but didnt realize why i hated my looks.
luckily i had my grandma’s boobs & mom’s hips. my poor sister had the opposite, lol.
so glad u got to have fun with the goats & didnt get rained on.
how about leggings/dark hose instead of pants? could help compress the veins. you have your own style, tho, & i love it.

I would NEVER wear leggings PERIOD.
Not a visual I treasure nor a fad I ENJOY!I do have on COMPRESSION STOCKINGS under the pants as I’m in heart failure and it does HELP with fatigue. The reason I had them on was it was a cold day and I knew I might have to STAND.Im not very good at standing because I become lightheaded and tired very quickly.

sorry, i meant dark stockings, not leggings. i like dark patterned stockings. & even at our age fishnet stockings make boys happy & would hide the veins.

i thought i mentioned it here, but goodrx can help cut prescription costs in a pinch. i even use them for pet meds

    Hi Elizabeth,

As everyone else has said, you did nothing wrong. It was their loss to not share their table with you. I loved what you were wearing!

I read about a new medicine to treat congestive heart failure.. Would this be of interest to you? Let me know by email.

I hope you don’t give up your blog–it brightens all of our lives!

I’ve been planting my annuals –now we’re sure to have a late frost. I bought 3 new roses. Here’s hoping they survive. how I wish my roses would look like yours! You and your garden are such an inspiration!

I love both of your outfits in the photos! The first one is really cute and the second, that you wore to the winery is sophisticated. You sat down with the goats! LOVE that!
It wasn’t anything to do with you that the dip-shits denied you a seat and an opportunity to chat. They are the ones who missed out by not meeting someone as special as you, La CONTESSA. Also, I really find it rude when friends are late and expect a seat to be saved at the expense of other people…just my pet peeve.
A wine tasting sounds like fun.
So, those pills are freakin’ pricey! Good thing your insurance is back ‘on’. Imagine losing that most important coverage because someone carelessly clicked the wrong button on their keyboard…seems like there should be some confirmation pop up to ensure it was meant to be deleted.
Our technology is not smarter than human touch, in my opinion.

Glad you sorted out your health insurance and the meds , that price seems insane.

OK Jim, I was waiting for this comment. He does look like a tarantula, but he was very furry close up and he was just so beautiful and he was huge. I know you don’t get that from my photographs, but he was enormous made me think of a furry bunny anyway I look forward to your email. Just know I don’t sit down at the computer every day anymore so it may be a few days before I answer. Thank you for considering me a cool Blogger I love that.

Dear Contessa: You did nothing wrong. As we clearly see, people can wear any sorts of outfits anywhere today. Example: casual clothes when clearly dressier clothes are required in order to show respect for the event. Therefore, in my logic, if one wants to dress up when others are not, or dress in brighter colors when others are not, then that too is acceptable because today everything and anything goes. The people, most unfortunately, were rude.

Let’s get to the more important issue though – you are going to be leaving us in terms of not writing the blog? Oh, dear. Will you stay on Instagram though?

Keep inching along. That’s all we can do. Inch along and look as lovely as possible.

Hoping this finds you smiling and enjoying your beautiful garden. It’s been raining here for days, but the blooms of Spring are absolutely gorgeous! You look splendid in those outfits! I have a top very much like yours in black, and wear it with white jeans. Your hats are especially festive. How rude of those people who declined your company – I suspect that you wouldn’t have enjoyed sitting with people like that anyway, but my gosh. I, too, long for the time when people had manners and dressed properly when going out in public. And don’t get me started on people glued to their phones. You are very kind to host the birthday celebration – I wish I could come! Do what you need to do to take care of yourself and find joy. Maybe you could go to a once-a-month format, or every other month. OR, have a post asking your readers for ideas! Happy Mothers Day, Contessa. Yes you are right chances are I would not have enjoyed the conversation! it all worked out in the end and we had a very pleasant drive there and back, and all the hills were green green green with a few cows and horses sprinkled in between. I only blog once or twice a month now and that’s as much as I can do as sitting there looking at a computer screen affects me in a terrible way I get horrible headaches and the vision goes so not for me anyhow looking forward to summertime in the warm weather and we have got to catch up I’ll try you this coming week !!

Your outfits are so YOU! I love and admire your chutzpah and self confidence. I also wear what I want—usually jeans and a t-shirt. Not nearly as creative as your wardrobe but it’s easy. And I’ve managed to get my shoes down to boots, sneakers and sandals. No more heels! (Although I could use the elevation now that I’ve gone from 5’8” to 5”3”.)

We are indeed a broken and divided society — your spontaneity in going up to a group of women and asking to sit there is wonderful authentic and even if waiting fir another person to join them could have said yes and looked fir another chair. Are you the lady that went to see Trish in her shop? If so, thank you so much for listening to me. At least I know one person is listening to me isn’t Trish a doll isn’t her shop just a bunch of EYE CANDY? you will be surprised it wasn’t just women. It was men and women and it was the men that were telling me NO!! it didn’t bother me. I just thought I would share that as it’s interesting to me and none of them popped up to get me a chair or was concerned. I had nowhere to sit. My husband was nowhere in sight. He was talking to the host and I thought oh I will be social and make my way through these people. Well ha ha my my bad I just hung with the goats!!

I think this cardiologist is on to something by taking me off all the medication’s and slowly adding a few pills back one by one. I don’t have to nap every afternoon. Don’t get me wrong I still do nap but some days I don’t nap and it surprises me! fingers crossed this treatment works because if it doesn’t, I’m headed for a heart transplant, which I do not want!

Yes!GOATS ARE WAY MORE FUN TOO!
I recently saw on Instagram a camel that was someone’s pet. He was rescued from a dairy farm. I don’t know what country this was, but it was beautiful. This camel followed the man around and went into his home. Wherever he went, he would go. The man would lock him up in a pen made for him, but the camel would just scream wanting to be with the man. I think that is just so beautiful. I need a farm badly.!!

    Ma Chere Contessa,
Welcome to Medicare and government bureaucracy! Honestly, Medicare is better managed than Social Security.. you can wait hours on the phone to get a live person!!
Hope you are spared any more mix ups and your Rx get covered.
I love the view down your garden lane?.
You have a wonderland of a garden!!
The goat story unfortunately is so typical of behavior these days.. a lack of openness for sure.
Unlike your planned birthday for someone who never had a birthday.. how is that possible to not be celebrated before. What a cool and kind gesture.. so Contessa!
I still recall the birthday party you had for Susan!
Lovely and fun and memorable.. that might have been my first visit to your “Italian home” in a suburban ranch style makeover?…so unexpectedly fabulous!

    Happy Mother’s Day!

It wasn’t your outfit, and you did nothing wrong, dear Elizabeth. The world has gone totally mad, and I fear our internal hostilities are manifesting themselves outwardly to the people we meet. And young people… So many of them have no clue how to talk to someone they don’t know. They talk softly and stare at the ground or their cell phone. Makes me so frustrated. Love, Brenda

GOOD BLOG AS ALWAYS! SO ENJOY YOUR WRITING STYLE AND PICS. WOW DIDN’T KNOW ABOUYT COSTS FOR A BLOG.
POOR MANNERS THOSE LADIES. I MET THE NICEST GROUP WHEN I WAS ON A CRUISE – INVITED ME TO JOIN THEM AT THEIR TABLE ANYTIME FOR A MEAL AND THE EVENING ENTERTAINMENT AS MY HUSBAND IS AN EARLY SLEEPER. I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED THE GOATS!
OH DEAR RE THE MEADOW – PENELOPE IS CORRECT! ALSO THERE ARE BEES THAT HAVE THEIR HOMES IN THE GROUND SO THEY MAY BE DESTROYED. THE MEADOW WOULD ATTRACT THE POLLINATORS. SO ENJOY EXPLORING YOUR GARDEN. WOW WHAT A VISITOR TO YOUR GARDEN!

It was a lot of money for a little antique shop. The original idea was to put up a website so I could sell the merchandise, but that was the beginning of websites and then blogs so because it cost so much I thought what do I do with it now as I’m closing the store that’s how the blog evolved from a website to a Blog!

I was so taken back when you shared the outrageous cost of your med. I hope that all gets resolved soon. Too bad about the goof with the insurance. Hopefully you have a good agent that can guide you to the very best secondary insurance. That is super important. It pays in the long run to get the best and that suits your needs.

About the people at that event who wouldn’t give you a seat….yes society has changed…I think so much of it has to do with the political mess…but having said that, that is no reason to be rude. I have always told my kids and now my grandkids, if there is one thing you can do in this life…just be kind. Speaking of grandkids…meant to comment in your last post how adorable your granddaughter is.

Yikes!! How mean and rude!!! Those are not “ladies” in my book!! Cruel and insensitive.

By the way, many birds nest in that meadow exactly this time of year! God knows how many nests of birds and beneficial insects are being destroyed by that mowing!! Perfect habitat for many “ground-nesters”!!! The DIVINE Italian doesn’t know!! I know him, and I know he would NEVER do that if he knew!!!
    HE HAS TO STOP!!!
I am hoping, with this knowledge he will stop and you will see your meadow bloom!! You can look up ground-nesting birds! We have lots around our pond!! No trimming or mowing!! Only in months that end in “er”! Just like the trees!! September October November December. Bird nests need protection!!! No tree trimming except those months!

A little finch has made a nest inside and it’s so beautiful to see them going back-and-forth making the nest with the hay, straw whatever I do worry about them, climbing to the top to get out but Tigre already spied that and I’m worried for the babies in case they fall!! this is the third year. They have made a nest in this basket bag. I have hanging outside my little patio area.!

At first I thought it was a farewell, but I’m glad you’ll continue sharing your stories with us.
I have the vein problem (spider veins) too, but even as a young woman, I never wore a miniskirt. Always show your best side, so do I at least.
The dress is overpriced in my opinion, but you’re wearing it in a very contessa style, and it looks particularly summery and pretty with the hat.
Although we need a social life especially at this time, by which I mean politeness and a bit of empathy, the majority probably sees it differently. Group formation has always been around, but in the past, people tried to include others in their circle, whereas today they are isolated. But perhaps it’s also a sign that you need more alone time and to listen more to yourself. I don’t really know. But we have a saying that is perhaps also known in America: “If you don’t come, you don’t have to go.” But this group had no idea what an interesting woman they were rejecting. Good luck anyway!

Rena in Spain the dress is very well priced for here.No where can we find this kind of design and workmanship with a fabric that isNoT super thin. The fabric is amazing that’s why I’m smiling!!I bought it from a photo and was delighted when it arrived.I know at your markets there are similar things priced less but this in a boutique here would be $300.00!
I have had too much alone time the last few years I really need to get out more and that’s why I tried. I do like my alone time and my animal time more than human time.! I have noticed it is important to be around people even if you don’t have words it makes a difference in your day if you see no one versus seeing others it’s very important to be around people. I had an epiphany!! most of the people were men and I was with my man so I didn’t need to talk to other men, but I just found it interesting so I thought I would mention it here. I have never heard you’re saying before. It’s a good one!

    Hi,
Insurance woes are the devil. I am so happy to be on Medicare, I’m just sorry yours got messed up. It will work itself out after a bit. (I hope you know who doesn’t screw it up) I love the jumpsuit, at least it looks like one. I would probably like a necklace or something over the scarf, but that’s me. Love the hat sans flowers. I think the thing is the opaque tights and shoes. They say winter. Lighten that situation up a bit. You asked and I hope you really wanted comments. NONE of that has a thing to do with rude people. You know that. I’m not sure what the age group of attendees consisted of, but if they were mixed, then absolutely no excuse for someone not jumping up and assisting with a chair. However, if it was a bunch of old people like myself, they can be grumpy, self centered, and out of touch with their happy side. Not me of course…….. Have a good week.

I am from sunny South Africa and your posts are an absolute delight – they make my day.

What is it with people these days? I was invited to a breakfast last week and was also alone, I managed to join a group of ladies who obligingly allowed me to sit at their table, – but not one of them engaged with me – I tried to throw in a word or two but I was totally ignored as they chatted amongst themselves. Came back home to my hubbie and lamented over the good old days when people had manners and knew how to behave socially. Perhaps I am getting old but how rude!!!.

Anyway we continue to smile, wave and smell the roses.

By the way – you look gorgeous in your outfits – you do you!!!

I have been to South Africa twice and found the people so lovely. I find that so hard to believe I have a friend there now on Safari and I can’t wait to see what she has to say. I told her the people were very special there and polite! amazingly enough, there was a lot of men where I had the seat situation and they were the first to say no and that’s why I mentioned no one got up to look for a chair normally, in the past, a man would do that. I don’t even think these men today know what they’re supposed to do or maybe we had a fit because they did that and we thought we didn’t need it. I don’t know what happened anyway i’m so happy we grew up when we grew up. I’m assuming you’re my age! can I ask you how you found me in South Africa? I’m just curious and what part of the country do you live in?

Oops that went off before I had finished – Isn’t it sad how men have forgotten how to be gentlemen… it does seem worse that it was a table of mostly men that were rude to you – they are generally the ones who would jump up and find a chair – I do think it is unfortunately woman (and their moms) who have confused them.

I live in Johannesburg – I came across your blog during covid when I had time to scroll and was looking for inspiration as I was heading past the middle age mark.

Five years on … your wonderful posts still inspire me. Sending lots of sunshine and friendly smiles from South Africa.

Nooooo, no more Contessa blog, un disastro.. You did nothing wrong, people are unfriendly nowadays. I pray your health improves. Your garden is the type I adore, a rambling, beautiful garden that keeps you wanting to discover what is around the next corner. Un grande abbraccio.

      Dear Rita,
Ciao thank you for your message. My garden is a bit of a mess this year as the Italian let the mow and blow man go after retiring! I remember being a kid and I loved wandering in the hill beside our house It was a vacant lot and discovering things. It was a very joyful time for me and I envisioned that here because I can’t do the Hardscape and all that needs to be done so it just needs to be a little bit of a messy Alice in Wonderland type garden! I do appreciate structure gardens as well and I’m so happy I made it to Sissinghurst and Great Dexter.
Both of those gardens were right up my alley!

    Dear Elizabeth

Wow what a snafu with your medicine. My husband had the same thing happen with his blood thinner!

Your garden and outfits lifted my spirits – and you looked perfect – those folks with the empty chairs missed a rare opportunity for you to sit with them.

Take care of yourself and hope to make it to Cali one day to give you a big hug.

    Much love,
    Amanda

You are a delight and your posts the highlight of my week . I feel for your health problems , living is not easy. Keep a sense of humour and I find smiling helps tremendously , even if sometimes the smile startles some people and they quickly look over the shoulder not believing you are smiling at them, then that gives me the giggles which can make it worse hahaxxxxxxxx

      Jo!
You always put a smile on my face and I always envision you in your big bed reading your iPad because you told me once that’s what you do and the husband brings you breakfast in bed down there in New Zealand. You are right smiling is the best revenge and solves many problems! I need to come visit you and get some tips because you’re looking absolutely magnificent these days and you two seem to be traveling a lot too!
Thank you for always being here. You have no idea how much I appreciate you!

    Dear Beth,

You’re really incredible the way you take things in your stride. I would’ve fainted to be told I would have to pay $1200+ for those pills because of the lack of insurance which wasnt your fault. I’d have had steam coming out of my ears. I don’t know how anyone can afford medical care in the USA. It’s Viva España, fortunately for me.

Loved your outfits – both of them are great and looked really good n you.

Those MEAN people – I would have insisted they let me sit there until their ‘friend’ arrived. But I can understand your not wishing to sit next to such an unfriendly bunch of people. Clearly they were MAGA/Trump supporters!

Keep on with your entertaining Blogs – we lovely you dearly! xxx

Oh Judith I have been through a similar situation with the meds before so I just rode the elevator to the fourth floor walk down the long hall walked in and announced I was there and got waited on immediately and the woman made a phone call and all was cleared up because she could see. We have been good clients for the past 31 years. So problem solved with a medication. I also had this situation similar happen during Covid with a seizure medication when they thought I had epilepsy which I don’t, but I was on that medicine for years!! I missed out on a lot of Vino and saved us a lot of money cause I wasn’t drinking!!
      Ha!
