AND SO……..I WAIT.

March 16, 2024 63 Comments

Have you ever had a day that is one thing after another and EVERYTHING takes an hour?

I had two of those days in a row this past week!

First off the WATER BILL told us we were using 69 gallons of water per day!

The watering system has been SHUT OFF since the end of October for the landscaping!

We are two people; plus the menagerie who barely touches the water……I would say the biggest intake is OLAF; as I wet his food down with it and add Prune JUICE in the mornings.

How he got the dishtowel perfectly on TOP OF HIMSELF is beyond me!

As I was paying BILLS I ran out of checks……..so I went to the drawer where we keep the boxes of checks and found TWO BOOKS inside. Both full of non-used DEPOSIT SLIPS!

Bottom line I was OUT of CHECKS………….

I was so MAD!

Do you think there is a phone number now on the printed checks for the bank?

The answer is NO!

I google. Get number. Call one minute before 9 am.

DO as required which takes a lot of time. Push ONE for THIS push TWO for THAT and find out they OPEN at 9 and cannot leave a message as I do not have the INBOX NUMBER of THE PERSON I WANT TO CHAT WITH.

Back to the water company.I call and am able to speak to a REAL LIVE PERSON!

Who tells me either they read the METER WRONG or we have a LEAK.

(Never mind the ITALIAN already checked the meter and informs me we have NO LEAK.)

He is GOOD at THAT STUFF……….unlike ME!

OH JOY!

NO LEAK JUST TWO COOKIE MONSTERS MAKING BIG COOKIES!

Let’s break this RANT up with a BOOK REVIEW SHALL WE?

THE AMAZING FIFI in her LATE 70’s I might ADD has come out with another book for us ALL TO ENJOY!Many are smaller homes with the ROMANTIC HOME being the theme and PASSION for these HOME OWNERS.Older homes that have been renovated on a BUDGET and a THIRST for THE HUNT at ANTIQUE and FLEA MARKETS…………with a SPLASH OF FRENCH SOPHISTICATION tossed in!

It’s a SPRING TIME FEAST for YOUR EYES and I had a little smile or chuckle as I READ THE BOOK!

In a lot of the photos I either own or did own a few of the OBJECTS DE DECOR!

This style hits on COMFORT and SHABBY CHIC with a sense of not being MORE is MORE.

Head to your LOCAL BOOKSTORE to PURCHASE or TO ORDER HER BOOK CLICK BELOW………..

https://www.amazon.com/Romantic-Home-Celebrating-present-design/dp/1800653093/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3MWUH1OBZ70SP&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.AmPPfpb8iZpFG8EufX-rLee1aQ7XHadx_V1JfpPk7kWTVbRyvkzBOP7QyGZ2gF0FYXbb1RYnGEcfmS7-p39Ipxvq7wCRg_ZueXKRCI0x_CkmhzPy5JsrGLHQPpjIrTuS_UeeWGmnGNp4iT4_Gd0MjRvtJTQktxGXIgOWhNLKl2HtlkZOzYTGjb06a1MYgWnEezCAoreK-qZGK8Gzw2Ct-Yh303eAOf3-A8Z1sbuVr_w.D4RPEHyY5F6GCzoo2Hy2-7yu7u6Y9WHjIwdtC_JmWNQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=THE+ROMANTIC+HOME&qid=1710515792&s=books&sprefix=the+romantic+home%2Cstripbooks%2C143&sr=1-1

I think YOU will enjoy it as we all are paring down as the years TROT ON.

YES!(THAT INCLUDES ME TOO!)

WeLL, KIND OF………..if I can find a good home for it I will give an item away!

Then again it might be a GOOD WAY to get back at THE FAMILY by letting them deal with it!

EVERYTHING I OWN HAS A STORY OR IS SENTIMENTAL.

NOTHING IS IN MY HOUSE BECAUSE IT WAS A NECESSITY.

I EITHER SAVED IT FROM THE DUMP OR PAID A GREAT DEAL OF MONEY FOR IT AS IT SPOKE TO ME!

I COVET THINGS AND NEVER EVER TIRE OF THEM…………

I THINK THAT MAKES ME WERID.

BUT THAT’s OKAY…………….YOU HANG OUT WITH ME!

ANOTHER BOOK I REALLY LOVED.

I would say MOST OF US GREW UP WITH Barbra Streisand!

I ENJOYED THIS 900 PAGE BOOK SO MUCH I DIDNOT WANT IT TO END!

WHAT SHE HAS ENDURED AND HOW SHE KEPT CONTROL OF HER WORK IN A MALE DOMINATED FIELD IS REALLY IMPRESSIVE!

I was crying and smiling ALL THE WAY THROUGH……..

SHE TOOK ME DOWN MEMORY LANE even though I did not know a lot of the names in the music world they seemed familiar to me.AND her BOYFRIENDS you will of course recall………….

I could RELATE to her on so many LEVELS.

NOT HER FAME but my job as a very young girl was to put her record albums on when my father returned home from work!SO, I grew up listening to HER SING in my living room.

I even put on a PLAY in our basement after THE MOVIE FUNNY GIRL came out which was me copying HER.

MY name was CLUMSY and I was an aspiring BALLERINA!

I entered the stage by doing somersaults ………………thats all I can really remember!

I WROTE AND PRODUCED AND DIRECTED plus STARED IN MY PRODUCTIONS and there were a FEW!

Oliver Twist was another production I copied.

I LOVED MAKING A STAGE SET AND PREFORMING!

I WAS OBSESSED WITH THE STAGE CURTAINS!

(THIS WAS ALL DONE IN THE 4th and 5th grades.)

LIFE can be one BIG performance if we want it to be!

THIS WAS NO PERFORMANCE.

JUST PURE BLISS AND HAPPINESS!

CHILDREN COME AND GO but their utensils, cups and plates remain!

The spoon was mine when I was a baby so we are looking at an item that is 64 years old.

The forks and the PUSHER were my FIRST BORNS………..

The plates both MY SONS HAD and I STILL DO!

ABOUT THOSE WIRES………..it’s been TWO WEEKS TODAY SINCE THEY CAME OFF.

DO YOU THINK I HAVE HEARD ANY NEWS?

I HAVE EMAILED MY DOCTORS as calling them is WORTHLESS.

I have CALLED THE COMPANY WHO HAS PROVIDED THIS SERVICE FOR KAISER.

THEY ARE OUT OF TEXAS.

NO RESPONSE YET……………….

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE WITH ME AND THINK THIS HAS FALLEN THROUGH THE CRACKS?

CRACKS LIKE THESE PERHAPS………..?

A CERTAIN PIGGY FOUND HIS WAY DOWN THE GARDEN STEPS THIS WEEK FOR A GRAND WALK ABOUT AND DISCOVERY!

IT WAS HEART WARMING as it’s been 6 months since we have had him and never before has HE wandered DOWN THE HILL!

There is a math formula one can do to get the weight of ones PIGGY!I was able to do it length times girth behind front legs times GIRTH AGAIN divided by 400!Which on OLAF equals 237 pounds!SO, this guy was more like 300 pounds upon ADOPTION I would guess!

HE IS MY PRIDE AND JOY and for those of you in the know things are improving between him and BETTY!

BE WELL!

AS THE SERVICE YOU GET WHEN YOU ARE NOT WELL IS BELOW AVERAGE in my neck of the woods!

I HEAR CANADA IS EVEN WORSE!

CHIME IN WITH YOUR THOUGHTS or STORIES BELOW ……….

KEEP SCROLLING DOWNWARDS TO COMMENT!

VENTING IS GOOD TO DO!

TRUST ME!

    Hi Contessa,

Just read your latest post but wanted to also comment about this blog and your issues with the bank checks. Why don’t you use online banking? It’s so much easier and so fast. The Netherlands stopped using checks in 2002 so everyone uses bank transfers, auto-payments, etc.

The US banks love the checks as they earn millions from overdrafts, etc.

Sending love and best wishes for better health!

    Hi there CONTESSA

Ellie’s friend was so fortunate that the health care system worked so well and rapidly for her.
I attended the Women’s Heart Summit las year in Vancouver – unfortunately there were some shocking stories re trying to get heart care!
So of course the health care system has many curves here in Canada.

Buona Sera, Elizabeth! I am sorry to learn you are still having problems.
I wouldn’t say medicine is worse in Canada. True, there are lots of problems here
    – some provinces have a shortage of family doctors (gps). Yes, we have lung doctors and cardiologists. The protocol is that you need to be referred to
specialists by your gp. I went to an urgent care centre recently. They did blood tests, an ecg, all tests were normal but because I had chest pains, the doctor at urgent care referred me to a cardiologist. I was really scared because within a day I had a referral to a cardiologist for 5 days later. Since my test results were normal, I didn’t expect to get a fast appointment. Anyway, I went to the cardiologist and
before I saw him, I had an echocardiogram and an ecg in his office. 15 minutes after the tests were completed I was in seeing the cardiologist and getting the test results (all normal). I am sure if I had problems, I could phone his office and get in.
I had to go to Emergency last weekend. I noticed that the hospital has implemented a different system which moved patients along in a much better way. From triage to a waiting room. Then a short wait, then saw a nurse who took blood tests (previously you would make it into a bed then wait ages for the doctor who would only then take blood tests). So this way, by the time you see a doctor, the doc has the preliminary test results. It is much more efficient this way.
There are many problems with our system but sometimes it works incredibly well.
At the moment, we’ve had bad snowstorms and an unprecedented number of people have fallen and broken bones and there’s a wait for operating rooms (in some cases) but the orthopaedic surgeons are superb. One of your readers said that they don’t contact you here if your test results are negative. That is true. I would always check up on results –– just in case a test result got lost. A recent change is that you can actually read all your test results online. They are posted almost immediately. I paid nothing for my ct scan, ecg, echocardiogram, blood tests. I have private insurance but it covers things like dental, physiotherapy, orthotics, prescription drugs (which are vastly cheaper here). It is $200 per month and I break even on it. cheers
Your granddaughter is so lovely! Great photos with GP.

“Mailing the results?” in 2024? Ridiculous. I suspect the issue is Kaiser communicating with an outside vendor. The Texas company should re send the test results IMMEDIATELY and electronically to your neurologist. Escalate the issue with a supervisor at the Texas company. I was an RN and department director for Sutter for 37 years, I manage my SIL’s care at Stanford, and Hubs and I have had Kaiser Senior Advantage since 2018. Kaiser is far and away the most efficient, fastest referral to specialists, test results, Sutter is ok, but local docs are quite impacted, but Stanford in my book is totally frustrating and inefficient. What the heck is “world class care” if you can’t get an appointment for 9 months as an established patient? I think as we baby boomers age, it will only get worse! I hope you get your results soon!

The little princess is exquisite in her crown – what adorable photos with Grandpa. Did you ever get the glue out of your hair? Have you heard back about the test yet? That is so infuriating! I have been playing telephone tag with a medical supply company for over a month. They have called my home phone when I’m away. I call them back and some Australian guy on a recording says to leave a message because no one is available. I leave the message, but I doubt anyone listens to it. This has happened about five times. I recently had a pretty serious medical test, heard nothing about it, so I called the doctor’s office. Apparently, they didn’t have enough tissue to do the test. Thanks a lot, why didn’t you just tell me? BUT, the next time I saw the doctor, he whipped out the results and reviewed them with me. Huh? The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Communication could use some improvement. Another example of the madness: I was waiting for either my Endodontist, Dentist, or Oral Surgeon to call me about what next steps for oral surgery; none of them did, so I had to call around to see what was going on. Ack! Now, in contrast, I had a yearly physical recently, and the nurse called me the next day to say that everything they checked was fine. And you won’t believe this, I had surgery last week, and the doctor came in afterward and gave me his personal cell phone number and said to call him if I needed anything. All of that to say, there is still hope! There are still decent people in health care!

    Buongiorno Contessa,

It took me an extra minute to be able to sit down and spend sometime with you here. I totally feel your frustration with the waiting game. I am experiencing something similar here with my mom’s prescription for Humira. She has been on this regime for some time now. All of a sudden her health insurance is telling us that going forward they won’t cover this for her. BUT, they will cover what they are now calling a “bio duplicate”. I’m not impressed! Thankfully, I have someone in her doctor’s office who is working with me to help us. Stay tuned, we have been waiting almost a month to get this prescription filled for her.

As for Charlotte, she is simply amazing. I’m so happy to see her in your environment on a regular basis. What a magical time for all of you.

As always, I am sending you un abbraccio forte!

    Hi Elizabeth,
I feel your pain. Things in the customer service area have become totally unacceptable. My biggest gripe is when you have store employees standing by the self-check register, to “help”. Why don’t they just check us out, instead of standing there with their hands behind their backs? Poor management, and no one wants to pay for good employees anymore. The Health industry in this country is pretty awful and experiencing some dramatic challenges.
On another note – your Charlotte is adorable and looks like she really had a ball baking with GP! I’ll bet she will be the next thespian in the family! You’ve got the props, costumes and stage!
I have the same dishes stored away for any future grandchildren, and my silver baby cups, forks and spoons too! Or I guess I could use them myself!
    Enjoy this pretty day!

Hi Elizabeth, love Charlotte she is adorable. So is your Olaf! Big boy!

Hey have you tried online banking it’s fantastic!

Medical in BC Canada is free. So any Dr appointment and emergency and hospitals are free. Our prescriptions are a fraction of the price than with you guys. I get a Prolia shots 2 times a yr. The drug is around $420.00 for each shot. I do pay extended insurance for my husband and that covers tone’s: prescription’s, massage, Chiro, physio, pychologists, upgraded hospital rooms.I only pay 20% of my drugs sometimes nothing. I do get the generic drugs and they are just fine. Way less for our government to purchase, therefore way less for us to buy. Our Extended insurance for the two of us is around $400 a month. My friend who lives in the Desert told me her friend get Prolia injections and they were costing her $2000. A shot? Need to verify this but if so crazy.
I need an MRI for my back and have had one before at no charge and got in fast. I am on a list that will take 6-8 months!! So I am paying privately tomorrow and it’s $985.00. I can not get my extended insurance to cover it but can be a deduction next yr.

All my medical tests are on a site that I myself can access.

If you don’t hear from your Dr. It is usually ok, but Instill want to know so I call.
Keep calling, we really have to advocate for ourselves. A friend is know facing terminal cancer and her Dr. Should have sent her for more testing and did not. I had a call with her on the weekend and it was so hard. I am gong to be her executor. Breaks my heart. She is single and dealing with this all on her own. She has moved to Vancouver Island which is a 2 hour ferry ride away. I will support her how ever I can.
      FUCK CANCER

I am so grateful for my health, my family and my friends.
Stay positive the alternative sucks! Love Mel

I love the sheer joy on the faces of the ITALIAN and your granddaughter!

Since the pandemic, I think that between people leaving the healthcare field, people working from home, people just not doing their jobs or willing to work, and companies not wanting to pay people to work, industries, especially the healthcare industry, have been in a downward spiral. As a senior citizen with health issues, it’s scary. I also realize that, before the pandemic, I took easy access to healthcare for granted. For years, I had heard how inexpensive healthcare was in other countries, but how difficult it was to be seen by a doctor. Now, it seems we have both expensive healthcare and difficulty getting in to see a doctor. I pray this will change! Thanks for letting me vent!

Hope your health improves and you get the results of your test soon!

But your joyous love for life, family and friends is so appreciated. That is what life is about. Turn on TV and you get all the ugliness what is going on. I say pay attention to what is going on in our democracy, vote responsibly. People in the state of California voting for Proposition 1 Mental Illness, people do not realize that voting for this in Contra Costa is taking away from what is already in place, the State will give what they want to those in need. Pay attention, ask questions and VOTE responsibly. Sorry, I did not mean to get into what is going on in our Country, I worry, what have we become. The photos of the Italian and your granddaughter are adorable. It’s clear he’s in love! And Olaf… Never thought I’d say this about a pig, but he’s adorable too. So he’s lost weight since you’ve had him? Have you had him on a diet? Since he weighs less, he may feel more like exploring. I hear your frustrations when it comes to hearing back from your doctors. Most of mine are really great, but every now and then I get one I’m not crazy about… or should I say I’m not crazy about their office personnel. I think it’s the young girls who work there who have no sense of…. anything! But I’m always nice to them for fear they’ll delete my chart. A 900-page book? Woah! There aren’t many people I’m interested in enough to spend 900 pages with them. Stay well my darling. xoxox, Brenda

The trials and tribulations of life seem to get more frequent as we get older and less solvable than years ago (which I find myself increasingly nostalgic about). Olaf looks so handsome…even trim!! And your granddaughter… she will follow in your footsteps I am sure… dress-up, plays… and her fairy grandmama will be there to assist with sets, costuming, etc : ) (And you have the PERFECT closet–a dream dressing room!) No words about what you have gone through in search of medical answers… you are intrepid. Hope you will have results soon after all you endured–they should pay you!! Our newlyweds are having their first anniversary next month.. I’m going to email a photo of our gift… a lovely older French woman created a needlepoint from my design (flowers a Monarch needs & Monarch)… gorgeous… the fine work is amazing and nearly a lost art. What fun to receive your posts in my inbox! A highlight of my email. I agree that dealing with some of the medical community is frustrating. In my experience, many are overworked and overwhelmed with sick people. We live in a small town in Texas and still rely on a local GP who has a vast knowledge of medical issues and common sense, plus a sense of humor. He is in his 70’s and still makes house calls. Unheard of, right? And his credentials, ( a graduate of Tulane), plus an additional degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A & M University make him a very interesting fellow. I hope you get the help you deserve and need. Thank you again for sending out your posts. I enjoy them very much.

I see productions (plays) in your future with your granddaughter. Maybe small holiday skits. The tradition can continue. She is expressive. In the stars.
Olaf enjoys a blanket like Banksy did. The skirted table a fav. so cute. Have a fun garden summer of discovery Olaf. You have new adventures coming.
Where we live, we usually only get text results when you go back to doctor with follow up appointment. Unless something is life threatening, then they call. Maybe, for your peace of mind, schedule a follow up visit when they schedule the test. It is a system, we have learned.
Barbra Streisand in a league of her own. No voice like hers. Just watched A Star Is Born, again. Never does any performance of hers get old.
Checks, water dept., health system, etc., yep they never stop. Multi tasking does!!!!! Yet your friend just produced another book at what age! Sounds like a fun book. Pairing down, just discussed with husband the thought of my “treasures” ending up God knows where. But…it is how treasure hunting has existed for centuries. Endings and beginnings.
Lastly, count me in! If you are “weird” happy to be in the company of extraordinary!

    Dear Elizabeth,

Your medical care seems outrageously bad. Maybe you need better insurance. However when you turn 65 it will be much better as long as you do NOT go for an Advantage plan. Stick to straight Medicare and a supplement. You will pay more monthly but have much less stress, won’t need referrals for specialists or pre approvals for anything and will receive better care so it will probably cost less in the long run. I suspect your problem is that you are on a for profit managed plan. Those are great for healthy people but lousy for people with unusual health situations. Also I am amazed that your doctors are not on some kind of electronic chart platform like “My Chart”. I love it! You get your test results the same time as your doctor, sometimes on the same day! You just need to have google handy while you go over them. No one cares about my health as much as I do so I want to be in charge.

I was on an Advantage plan which was wonderful when I was in perfect health but once I was diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm I knew I needed choices so I switched. It’s a good thing to pick my own doctors by referrals from friends.

    Good luck. ??

Absolutely love the closeup of Olaf- adorable! Followups are almost nonexistent.
Due to the medical portals, doctors expect you to read your own test results and then call them to schedule an appointment to explain the results to you. I remember when my doctor or his assistant would call me to tell me the results- now it seems you are on your own – which wouldn’t be terrible if you could actually reach someone from the office to speak with! But no, you have to make yet another appointment just to speak on the phone with your doctor! It’s all extremely frustrating trying to navigate the new medical system.
Love the photo of grandaughter – her smile is pure joy!

Dear Elizabeth, thank you so much for mentioning my new book. I am so glad you enjoy it. It’s doing very well and is #1 on Amazon best sellers’ new release. You are so right when you say I am in my late 70s. Very late in fact as I will be 79 in May. Thank goodness I am still going strong. I think it has to do with doing what I love. The Romantic Home is my 10th book. The 11th one, The Soulful Cottage will be released this September, and #12, French Flair, will be out March 2025. And there is another coming also next year…..stay tuned and thanks again. XOXOXO fifi

    Contessa,
You must look for this other book by Barbara Streisand, unfortunately I cannot remember the title. It’s about her decorating her home. The pictures are beautiful. She is such a perfectionist. I do remember one picture she is sitting on a sofa , her dress and the upholstery are the same fabric, stunning. You will love it.
    Have a great day.

        Hi Elizabeth,
You were an on stage actress in your own home, and will always be a ballerina at heart.
Your granddaughter is too adorable, love her million dollar ear to ear smile along with your handsome Italian. Baking cookies always brings out the best in everyone. Especially if the end result is so good. I have such fond memories baking with my grandma. She was the best cook and baker. Before they moved to Oakland, CA she owned a restaurant in Iowa. She and home mechanics taught me everything I know til this day.

I hear you loud and clear when you are waiting and waiting to get your results. You feel somewhat anxious till you get the results. I hope you receive them very soon.

Take care of yourself and all those that you hold dear to your heart.

The waiting adds insult to injury and the annoyance of phone follow-up makes it even worse. Hope you hear the results soon! On your water bill, you really are way below average in consumption; “On average in the US, water use at home (water from the tap, toilet, dishwasher, etc.) adds up to about 138 gallons per household per day, or 60 gallons per person per day.” My best friend in high school was a Barbra freak in the 60’s, so I listened to all her albums, amazing voice and career.

    Hi there CONTESSA
Oh dear re water bill – hope it gets straightened out fast. We don’t have a separate water bill here – it’s included in our yearly taxes – really don’t know how they figure how much the house should be charged.
Cheques – a credit union I use will print on the spot for me. Other places you need to order. I hate the call centres for financial institutions – just give me the # for the branch I use – I want to talk to someone there. No have to call the call centre.
What fun the Italian is having with the granddaughter – a very special time.
Health Care in Canada – there are numerous concerns – shortage of family doctors -some are only working part-time – long long waits in the emergency ward – long long waits for knee/hip surgery.
We do have walk in clinics and they are good. So far I have been ok with getting medical care – have not had anything “serious”.
Last night I listened to a panel on tv re health care in Ontario – bad there.
Yes I think things have fallen between the cracks with you! you might have to go to the office!
Paring down – should I bring an empty suitcase when I visit in May?

The photo of the Italian and Principessa Carlotta is beyond priceless and to be treasured for a life time. I am with you on what I either have had or sold when looking in books blogs and watching decorating videos. You gave me a chuckle as to let the kids get rid of it as a revenge. I am saying the same as trying to go through my jewelry which is now vintage and bagging labeling as to what stone and metal it is when gifted by my husband or by whom or where it was acquired. It is also overwhelming what I also have in jewelry making supplies and tools and since not doing it any longer I look at it all and say manana. All my stuff may end up in Good Will. Anything silver or brown wood will too. Enjoying as long as I can. Hoping your medical results come soon.

My daughter is making jewelry in her spare time.- that is a bit of a joke with three sons and working. She is an AuD. And taking of me. I’m 80 and going thru the b ionic transformation process. First it was my left knee, then my back, now my other knee and hip. It all started at 72. Anyway, not loving the journey. She by the way is a love through it all.
Anyway I would love to gift her the jewelry making items. I would pay the mailing/shipping. Plus for ur trouble.
      I live in Denver.

Gigi, I would also be interested in your jewelry-making tools and supplies. This is assuming they are things I don’t already have. I, too, would be happy to give you something for them and pay for shipping. It occurs to me that you will not see this, but perhaps Contessa will. Hi Elizabeth! I just love Olaf wearing his dishtowel! Yes, how did he do it is the question. I’d noticed he’s definitely slimmed down.
We have learned that the docs are terrible at calling with the results of important medical tests anymore. Just one of many examples- My husband had an MRI for his ear 5 weeks ago and After 2 weeks I called- 3 times trying to get results for him (I am authorized). Finally was told he’d need a telehealth appt. with the doc, which happens Monday. I totally get your frustration!
Wow about your water bill! Our irrigation has been off down here since late last year too. Let us know what turns out to be the problem.
Love all the photos and stories as always!
I loved Barbara Streisand in all her movies and music.
